Former Oranje player Glenn Helder institutionalized
Former Vitesse and Arsenal player Glenn Helder (38) is admitted in the psychiatric ward of De Waag in Haarlem. The Dutch Probation Office has taken their hands of the ex-international.
Helder is currently serving a prison sentence for threatening and stalking his ex-wife, assault and battery of her new boyfriend and illegal weapon possession.
Psychological tests showed that Helder suffers from a “narcistic personality crisis with hints of borderline psychosis”. The former left winger of Vitesse, Arsenal, Benfica and Oranje doubts these results he is willing to voluntarily cooperate.
During his tenure in London with Arsenal, Helder lost himself in the world of glitter and gold and got addicted to gambling, losing all of his money.
It’s sad. He once was a happy-go-lucky guy, taking care of his friends and family… There should be a center for former-famous people to teach them how to handle fame and fortune.

I know that Helder had a gambling problem when he played for Arsenal… i saw a program on tv bout him a couple of years later and he was a very sad person….livin in his car, having debts, lost his wife etc. etc., he was a pretty decent left winger, sad to see someone slip up like that
when i think about it; we hear very few stories like these…..looks like most pro football players can manage themselfs outside football

Glenn Helder was a good soccer player. He never was the star of the team but had quite some good performances before Euro 96. I feel sorry for him.
