Finn’s New Quiz

February 21st, 2008 | By: Jan | 21 Comments »

This week’s little brain twister:

1) Since this was a week of decent CL action, name the only 8 players ever to play at least 100 Champions League matches.

2) Supposedly 15 players have gone from the English Premier League (EPL) to Real Madrid (which means from 1992 and onwards). Name them. I can only come up with 12 but maybe you guys can help out here…

3) Who is the only player to have scored in the top leagues in England, France, Spain, Italy and Germany…?

4) What did West Ham do in 1975 that has never happened since (and probably never will do)

5) Two players played in EC qualification for 1992 and ALSO in EC qualification for 2008 (16 years later!!), name them.

6) Who was the first foreigner to play a decade for the same team in EPL?

And finally:

7) Why is Sheffield Wednesday called exactly that?

Enjoy. Answers in about a week.

Answers:

Good effort from all here. You did very well, in fact you got some that I thought was impossible…

1) Dirk nailed this one right on the head. Impressive! The 8 players with at least 100 CL games are the following:Raúl,Giggs,Maldini,R.Carlos,Kahn, Beckham,Figo, and Seedorf. Jan,you should have gotten Seedorf:-).
“Oooh, Ahh, Van Dah Sah” as they chant at Old Trafford was a good guess, but remember he played 4 years at Fulham…whom have never won the EPL or the old First Division in its entire history. I think no 6 is their best place, so no CL on that front those years.

2)As Jan, Igor, Bruce, and Olivia pointed out, the 15 players that supposedly have joined Real from EPL (i.e. after 1992) are: Steve MacManaman, Woodgate, Beckham, Owen, Nistelrooy, Robben, Heinze, Dudek, Reyes, Baptista, Gravesen. In addition, I can add Anelka. That is 12, there is evidently 3 more, but I can’t think of anymore…

3) I can’t believe Lerkot got this one (incl spelling…). The only player to have scored in the top leagues in England, France, Spain, Italy and Germany is indeed Florin Răducioiu from Romania. For those who remembers, he was a big player for them in the 1990 WC, but I honestly thought this was impossible. I certainly didn’t even get close myself…

4)Some innovative and creative thinking on this one, but no one got it completely right. West Ham won the FA cup in 1975 (beat Fulham 2-0, I believe) and it was the LAST time a team with a completely English born lineup won the FA Cup, and will most likely never happen again! In fact of the 22 players that started that game, only 1 was not born in England (forget his name but I think he was from Northern Ireland (and it wasn’t George Best). He played for Fulham anyway)

5) The two players who played EC qualification in 1992 and 16 years later in 2008 was indeed Litmanen and Giggs. Pretty impressive feat in this day and age. Lerkot and Dirk got that one too. Maldini was a very good guess (and would have been another one), but he announced his retirement from NT soccer after the 2002 Italy exit. He still holds the record for most Italian caps (125 or 127, I believe, could/should have been a lot more though)

6) A tad surprised that nobody got this one. The first “foreigner” to play a decade for the same team in EPL was actually not Ryan Giggs (he was the second). It was Jan Molby for Liverpool. Besides having a bit of a weight problem, I think he was also one of the first non-British footballers to get caught drunk driving…

7) Jan and Dirk both got this. Sheffield Wednesday is indeed called exactly that because they played their games on a Wednesday. Incendentally, there were another unknown Sheffield team at the time called Thursday Wanderers…so I guess with weekends and Thursdays out of the question, Wednesday was as good a pick as anything…

Well done. I’ll post a new one shortly.

On a very happy day that saw Chelski lose to Barnsley in the FA Cup, it is only prudent to post a new quiz for next week. I guess if Mourinho can get fired for winning the league & FA Cup twice, Grant is probably reading the job section already…

Here goes:

1) Actually I don’t have the exact answer to this one but I have a fair idea though. Lets see what we can come up with. The question is: The EPL is 15 years old this season, name the Dutch players that have played in the Prem (i.e. since 92-93)?

2) Only 4 Dutch players have been named EPL Player of the Month. Who are they?

3) Two Norwegians have been team captains in the Eresdivisie. Can you name them?

4) What happened to Liverpool for the first time in the 1987 League cup final vs Arsenal?

5) Why is Barcelona’s Nou Camp never completely full?

6) Which player is the only one to score a hat-trick in two different world cups?

And Finally:

7) What top professional European team has had the same shirt sponsor the longest?

1. I’ll tell you tomorrow.
2. Hmm… Ruud van Nistelrooy, Jerrel Hasselbaink, Dennis Bergkamp and… hmm… Arjen Robben
3. Andre Bergdölmo, probably, and probably some Heerenveen-player.
4. I dont know. I suppose everybody died like they usually do when Liverpool play.
5. Hmm.. not sure… because Spanish away fans suck?
6. Sounds like it might be Ronaldo or Gerd Müller. Or didnt Gabriel Batistuta score a hattrick in… hmm.. 90 and 94? No, it must be 94 and 98.
7. Well… PSV? Or some German team… like Werder Bremen

3. Was Halvar Thoreson one of them.
4. The first time they won the league, and the league cup?
5. Does this have anything to do with the Pope?
6. And this is definitly Bastituta.
7. I think it would have to be either Ajax, because we’ve had Abn Amro for a while, even if we didn’t have it for a time. Or maybe Celtic.

Right… I thought it looked familiar. But I don’t really keep track of that stuff. I don’t like seeing sponsor names on jerseys, but I’m old fashioned that way :-)
