Yep Andrew . That’s how it was… Gullit playing libero and thundering forward with big steps in the second half.

I do feel that we had an ok group in the beginning of the 80s, but somehow we failed to qualify. The EC1980 was a disaster. The WC1982 was missed by a cat’s whisker, etc 84, 86…

Goose , Van Loen wasn’t in the 80s man . That was post 1988.

In the beginning of the 80s we had Arnold Muhren, Frans Thijssen, Ruud Krol, Kees Kist, Pier Tol, Hugo Hovenkamp, Spelbos, Jantje Peters, La Ling… Not that bad…

Goose, I can help you with that. I was living in the UK at the time; it was during the 1984 EC qualifiers. The tenor of the papers in the build up was that it was to be Ireland’s game; that Oranje had receded as a European contender after the JC generation; and that while the current team looked to have a promising future, it was unbelievably young. They rattled off names like Van Basten, Gullit, the Koeman brothers, etc. I went out that night having heard a halftime score of 2-0 Ireland, and didn’t pay much attention, until the next morning…the papers were proverbially gasping about the talent of the young Dutch players…especially Gullit…I never saw the game, but the post game stories were that Gullit had been playing in a defensive role in the first half, but moved forward in the second half, and the Irish had no answer for him. (Again, I’m only going by the papers’ reporting.) Not long after, the same team came back from 1-0 at halftime against Spain, and seemed to have EC qualifying in hand based on goal difference…then came Spain v. Malta.
