European Football again, at last…

A day at the office of Jhon van Beukering, NEC-striker

The European euro-ball is starting again, next week. Champions League football! What a posters to look out for… Liverpool – Real Madrid, anyone?

But before Robben takes revenge on The Reds (his Chelsea was beaten twice in a row by ‘Pool), there’s a starters’ course this week. UEFA Cup football. With three Dutch clubs involved.

The once mighty Ajax plays Fiorentina, NEC takes on Martin Jol’s HSV Hamburg (Jol: “Rafael won’t come back to Hamburg…”) and FC Twente against Geret’s and Zenden’s Olympique Marseille.

Interesting matches. Ajax isn’t too relaxed for the match against Mutu, Gilardino & Co. Gabri, Cvitanich, Jan Vertonghen and Robbie Wielaert won’t be starting in Florence. The latter isn’t allowed to play since he played UEFA Cup football with FC Twente already. The other three aren’t fit to play.

NEC’s Mario Been has some headaches as well, but where Ajax is expected to do well, anything goes for the club from Nijmegen. The fact that they qualified in itself is seen as an enormous victory already. Mario Been can’t use his usual forward three due to injuries and other setbacks.

Been demands a clean fight: “Last Sunday, we lacked spirit. If we aren’t able to push ourselves to the limit against HSV, we might as well forfeit the game and go straight to the Reeperbahn (the erotic section in Hamburg).”

Steve McLaren doesn’t have any worries for his game in France. Everybody is fit. Ex-NEC signing Peter Wisgerhof can’t play, because he already played UEFA for NEC.

Ok, ready for some amazing news from Holland?

The Oranje players aren’t happy with the medical staff of the KNVB. They used to work with Leo Echteld, a physiotherapist brought in by Hiddink or Rijkaard… Can’t remember… Anyway, Leo was let go recently (by Van Basten or Van Marwijk…again…can’t remember). Doesn’t matter. What matters is this: the players (highly paid and seriously insured players) aren’t happy with the current medical staff and have requested Van Marwijk to hire Echteld back in. They trust him. Players like one Gio van Bronckhorst, one Rafael van der Vaart, one Robin van Persie, to name a few…

So, you’d expect the KNVB to take their players seriously. They will have to do the job for you if you want to win the WC, right?

I think Van Marwijk was happy to oblige, but Henk Kesler – the numbnuts – vetoed this and won’t get Echteld back into the Oranje staff.

Only in Zeist, my friends, only in Zeist…

The KNVB big wigs being idiots again… what else is new? I wish there was some way we could get them booted out of their comfy life-long positions!

Stupid Dutch teams. Ajax buy Wielaert, so Twente has no chance of going through. Twente buy Wisgerhof, so NEC has no chance of going through. Couldnt they just have waited until the end of the season?

Off topic, just a heads up if anyone is interested and planning on making the trip to South Africa, tickets start going on sale this Friday at 11:00 GMT. You can buy them on the FIFA website.

Ajax and Twente both get 1-0 wins away from home, not bad. Could be an all-dutch Round of 16 game, meaning at least 1 dutch team gets into the QF.

Great news. Last year Fiorentina won against PSV, they were lucky Afellay couldn’t play the 2nd leg but this year I’m confident Ajax will beat them at home.
