Eredivisie top clubs investigate hamstrings…

December 1st, 2008 | By: Jan | 23 Comments »

Feyenoord lost another player last Sunday, in the game versus Vitesse. Oranje international Tim De Cler was replaced due to…yes…hamstring problems.

“As a coach, you hold your breath anytime a players grabs onto his thigh,” said coach Gertjan Verbeek, who witnessed Landzaat, De Guzman, Mols, Slory and Bruins move into the sickbay earlier on in the season with similar injuries.

“And it’s not just at Feyenoord. I see it with all clubs, in Holland and abroad. It’s remarkable, really, this upsurge in hamstring and knee ligament injuries.”

Feyenoord took the initiative to analyze the players and their injuries at the Erasmus Medical Center. “We will also study alternative ways to help players get back to their normal fitness level. We’ve seen many players – again, at Feyenoord and elsewhere – getting injured again in the final stage of recovery. We might have to change the existing protocols.”

Some people blame Feyenoord’s strict fitness and cardio regime, introduced this season. Verbeek: “That’s nonsense. These people don’t understand the human body. There is no relationship between hamstring issues and our fitness program. By the way, we haven’t worked that program since the season started. Once the game is on, there is no time inbetween matches to structurally build up muscle power anyway. I think it has to do with the enormous pressure on the players’ bodies due to the full calender. They play tough matches every three or four days and players these days don’t have time to recuperate. It’s not just here, look at Madrid, Arsenal, Ajax… There’s too much acid in the thigh muscles and too much activity makes the muscles say: ok, I’m quitting now…”

Verbeek was asked whether he had personal experiences with the injury. “Me? No… I never had a hamstring injury. Actually, I never was injured…”

Feyenoord is happy to exchange their know-how with other clubs, should they be interested. In Verbeek’s eyes, it’s not a Feyenoord problem, but a structural problem. “We play a full on season, than there’s international games, with travel and all. And the national cup is really important for every club too. Most of our players have international duties too, so it’s a bit too much. Can’t say I was happy with the Olympics, either. The more clubs come to the same conclusion, the stronger our case will be. But, I shouldn’t jump to conclusions as yet. We’ll wait and see what the experts say…”

There are 2 reasons why this is happening. One fairly legimate and one rubbish. The fairly legimitate reason is the schedule congestion, although one can argue the coaches do not rest/revolve key players enough so they can restitute completely due to squad limitations.

The rubbish reason is the players themselves (and to some extent the coaches fault) for not warming up properly. You would think in this day and age, the players would have the wits about them to make sure they are ready to go when they need to. It is basic stuff. Unfortunately, sometimes there is not much you can do (i.e. like a late substitution), but there is no excuse for nonsense like Babel pulling his hamstring in EC training for not looking after himself properly after a long and gruelling season in the EPL.

Sometimes I wonder if low intellect is a requirement to become a great fottball player. There’s quite a few in Oranje at the moment that I don’t think I will see on a televised Quiz show anytime soon. Although a “jeopardy” style of a program with soccer players would be very interesting…Hmmm…

Goal.com is reporting that KJH has been signed by Los Merenguez…

http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/471/netherlands/2008/12/01/991361/breaking-news-real-madrid-sign-klaas-jan-huntelaar

Maybe Real should now wear orange shirts instead of white ones?

RVN was playing spectacularly well before he was injured. RM’s current bad spell started pretty much at the same time as his injury. Nice for those of us who can watch RM play regularly.

That aside, what bothers me is that you have Dutch internationals deputizing for Dutch internationals. When they’re all healthy (I know, big “if” there), VDV plays behind Wesley, Drenthe will play behind Robben, KJH will play behind RVN (and possibly Higuain and Raul will be preferred to him). They’ll have a month, two months of regular first team action (KJH will have the rest of this season), then to the bench. These guys need to go to teams where they have a first team spot when healthy. They need to play, not sit. I know Drenthe is not a favorite to some, but since Robben’s injury, he has looked very dangerous. It will do him no good to go back to the bench.

Good point Andrew. I was thinking the same thing recently, especially about VDV and Sneijder, but it also applies to Drenthe/Robben and now possibly KJH/Ruud. Not the best situation…

Hamstrings occur particularly in the early season or after the xmas break. As Finn said it’s a simple situaton that can be avoided. I never had hamstring injuries when I was fit. I got it ONCE when I went on early in the season as a sub not fully warmed up. The worse thing after that is that I came back too soon and bang it happened again. It needs total rest for 6 weeks altho nowadays with the ultra modern equipment it can be reduced. Am somewhat surprised that these professionals are still getting such injuries.

is it really official?

the problem is that schuster will be sacked and the madrid public is a little bit tired with dutch players. i’m sure that after schuster’s sacking 3 or 4 of our players will go to other clubs. and hopefully they will not spend too many time on the bench. schuster got an ultimatum: if they loose at camp nou in 2 weeks,he will have to find another job. i saw saturday both real and barca, and the future doesn’t seem too promising for the merengues. i would say something like barca-real 5-1,5-0.

@Ferenc: Well the story is all over newspapers in the UK as well, which does not make it official by any stretch of the imagination, but I guess it is a decent indication there is a bit of meat to it.

In other news, there is also all kinds of speculation that Seedorf is planning his swansong in the EPL and is being linked to several teams like Middlesborough, Spurs, Newcastle and Fulham.

Off topic: Kuyt had several missed oppty’s today when L’pool drew against West Ham at home. Rumours say Torres may be out another full 3 weeks…Dirk should have scored at least two…Babel came on as a sub and should have scored as well.

Boy do they look like they need Torres in a big way, and although they pulled 1 point ahead of Chelsea in the league, they will not stay on top for long without him playing.

The AD sportspaper says it’s just rumors and a game played by Real. Van Basten and Coronel deny the deal. “We’re still talking and there won’t be a deal until we announce it.”

Real offered 20 mio, Ajax wants 30 mio. Marco really doesn’t want to sell Huntelaar

Jan I read in todays Telesport that the gap is only $3 million. Ajax wants 23 million ? It seems a done deal. KJH has already agreed to terms.

I read the same thing on soccernet, but only 20million, i swear someone offered 35 or something in the summer. Huntelaar has to get out of the eredivisie soon, his form is starting to wane, and pretty soon he’s just going to be an average striker, who never made it to a top club.

I’m glad we don’t have any internationals until February seeing as we’re missing Sneijder, Robben, and Huntelaar, and van der Vaart barely plays at Real Madrid.

Huntelaar isn’t going to Real for nothing, if it is true, Ajax will be asking the jackpot for him, and I don’t blame them.
