Mclaren did well at Middlesbrough (with a bunch of dutch players too), but I’m starting to really think that it takes a different type of manager to do well on the international scene. Club coaching and national team coaching are quite different. In a club, if you have a weak defense, you buy some new defense players to strengthen it. In a national team, you have a weak position.. well, too bad for you. With a club, you get to work with your team, day in, day out. With a national team, you get to work with your team maybe around once a month for a few days.

Interesting thought, on Van Gelder…

Is there a way to test these things? Like in share-investments there is a newspaper in Australia who pick 8 people and give them 100,000 $ in fake money to invest. They monitor the progress every week. There’s 4 professional bankers/investors and there’s a 12 year old, an entertainer, an athlete and hold on….a monkey!

The pro’s normally perform the worst and sometimes the monkey makes the most money . True story.

mclaren may not be the best coach but he is certainly better MVB, remember he did take middlesbrough to europe for the very first time and won the clubs only honor to date.

MVB is just coaching because he has a name … i’m sure jack van gelder could coach our national side and produce the same results if not better.

I’m with you, Jan and Goose–send van Basten to England, place Hiddink as coach of “our” national team. Who knows, that might turn out to be a win-win, as I believe McLaren to be a less gifted coach than Marco.
