Edwin van der Sar: no nightmares…

May 27th, 2009 | By: Jan | 10 Comments »

Barcelona scored more than 100 goals this season. But Edwin van der Sar does not fear the star-strikers of the Bluegrana’s. The ManUnited goalie has a good feeling about the CL finals.

“We’ve worked hard all season to come to this, the moment the silverware is distributed. We won the PL and now we want that CL cup as well. We have the experience, we know how important this game is. That will help us.”

Van der Sar played a CL finals already in today’s venue in Rome. Against Juventus in 1996 and he lost it. Penalties. But Sar has matured since. “I was very nervous then. The first year (1995) everything went for us. We didn’t have any injuries, it all went our way. The second year took more energy, the flow was missing. But I’ve grown and I can handle certain situations much better. But, any team can hurt you and certainly at this level. One bad moment, one second of not being aware and you can throw it all away. I will need to be on the alert for every second of the game.”

Van der Sar doesn’t ponder the big names he’s up against. “Sure, Barcelona has some tremendous names and they will get their chances. But they don’t give me nightmares. We will get our chances too. I’m confident about our defense. I feel good myself and we’re all very eager to win the cup again. Barcelona is good. Tonight, we just need to be better.”

Man…I like Van der Sar!!! He is one of those you always root for! He has everything one wants in a goalkeeper and above all character.
He is the best, and I hope he makes excellent saves during the game today.

i think this year the feeling is similar to 94. milan-barca 4-0 but in the opposite way. in 94 milan had serious defence problems (no baresi,no costacurta etc),barca was considered as arc-favourite. this year barca has problems at the back (marquez, abidal, alves),people think mu will win it. let’s see and hopefully barca win tonight. good news that bot iniesta and henry will play

ManU played typical English football, long range passes from the wings, fast counter attacks, too damn bad that did not work and I’m glad ManU lost. If it wasn’t for VDS.. anyways, Barca played excellent football. They definitely slowed down the pace of the game by playing short passes. Rooney was invisible, so was Giggs. Parks did not get many chances, Ronaldo was selfish, Berbatov came in too late, Scholes should be a wrestler…

VDS got an 8 for his match performance whereas most of the rest of Manu got 4.5-6. That says it all, when your keeper is the busiest and best man on the field.
