Dutch Glory in CL - UPDATE

September 19th, 2007 | By: Jan | 15 Comments »

It’s great to see our fellow country men do so well in Europe. As you can see in my earlier post, we do have some cracks roaming the European football fields, but alas…you can’t put them all in one team.

Anyway, Dirk Kuyt scored for Liverpool against Porto and Ruud had an assist on Raul and a goal - his 50est in the CL - against Werder Bremen for Real Madrid. Robben made his debut for Real (replacing Raul) and Drenthe came on as well, giving us the four Dutchies on the pitch. Go Schuster!

Seedorf won with AC Milan and Romeo Castelen was matchwinner for HSV in their UEFA match.

Van Persie scored a beauty against Sevilla (2-0) after Cesc opened the score with the help of former Ajax defender Escude. Edwin van der Sar was the ManU hero in their 0-1 win. Ronaldo scored the winner after the Dutch captain stopped a couple of tremendous efforts with cat-like prowess.

PSV Eindhoven won their first match against CSKA Moscow. Ronald Koeman tightened up his team by leaving Perez and Assaiti out of the line up. Afellay was the sole creative midfielder and Koevermans and Lazovic played upfront. It took some time for PSV to settle in but after Afellay was brutally kicked out of the match in the first quarter and Perez replaced him PSV got in their flow. Koev and Lazovic missed some chances but it was Lazovic to score after a Perez assist. The latter scored after a Kromkamp assist, who came on to close down the PSV defense and apparently he did very well… In the dying minutes CSKA got their consolation goal.

Ya man. Kuyt is an outstanding player.

Not sure why he gets labeled as mediocre?

Not sure about that either. Its probably because he doesnt score much goals, and he’s not a technical genius like Bergkamp or Kluivert. He is sort of a much better version of Peter van Vossen, and thats good enough some days.

like the compare you made with vanVossen Lerkot.. vanVossen is actually one of my all time fav. Oranje soldier..remember him being responcible for us qualifying for WC94 in the US… i remember him coming on at Webley and take a penalty against the english (right from the bench)

he was indeed a bit like Kuyt..hard worker, ok skills, big, big heart!!

think is also true that Kuyt is getting compared to all these great strikers we have and had…

but

im still not really convinced if Kuyt is good enough to be the best….

btw; Ruud played pretty awful yesterday, he didnt look sharp at all.. great to see Robben play, lets hope he lost the diving part of his game..Sneijder didntr play well too..was too eager!

lets see how Psv handles itself.

I would pick Kuijt over Babel any damn day actually, probably over Huntelaar as well considering how weak he looks in big games. But Kuijt might be better in a 4-4-2-system.

And about Castelen, I feel he should be used a bit more. He is a decent right winger and if we play 4-3-3, it seems only logical to use the best right winger we have.

Agree with Tiju Thomas. Kuyt is skill-wise below average. His first touches and passing stink. What he lacks in skills he makes up for in heart, hussle etc. I think though Oranje has plenty of options before selecting Kuyt, including all that Tiju mentioned as well as non selections like Makaay.
byw, my 16 year old son is a Liverpool fan and he is always pissed at Kuyt.

We have many talents: VP, Ruud, Robben, VDV, Sneijder. Kuyt would be a good choice for making team balance

As I remember, we played not so bad with Robben-Ruud-Kuyt upfront and then things changed when Marco replaced Kuyt by VP.

Goose - I wouldn’t say Ruud played pretty awful.. he didn’t always look sharp like you said, but he did get an assist and a goal, and he had a few good plays on top of that. He did look very inconsistent, but it’s hard to say a player played pretty awful if he gets a goal and an assist..

point taken Caleb but i always like to spice thing up…but even with his assist and goal he played not good..should/could have scored some more, lost the ball all the time..almost the same as in the Albania game where he didnt play good also but scored this amasing goal

Yeah, he didn’t look that sharp, and he did loose the ball too much, but I guess that is the great thing about him, that he can be having a crappy game and then still get a goal and assist out of nowhere.
