Dutch discussion started – thanks to Davids!
It was quiet after Holland was ousted from the WC. Most pundits and columnists were kind to the team and it’s coach, Marco van Basten. Only Johan Derksen, ciritical as ever, wrote some thought provoking articles… But since Davids’ open letter on the VI-site, other analysts came to the feed like vultures… Hugo Borst supported Davids’ views, thanking him for opening up the somewhat “forbidden” criticism on our national coach. He too finds it questionable that Sneijder was made boss of midfield, whilst the chap doesn’t even have a starting spot in Ajax’ line up. Or that van Basten thinks van Bommel is uncoachable, while Rijkaard, Ten Cate en Hiddink think he is… At the same time, Borst does mention the fact that Davids – who started the qualification as Oranje’s captain, was too late twice for training, which pissed van Basen off big time. Other columnists agree that van Basten’s coaching was poor, the quality of play during qualification was poor and that it is not “Dutch” to claim before a WC that you are preparing for the EC… So it seems that the National Oranje Evaluation has finally started.
The Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) has stated that they will not respond to Davids’ letter. Some analysts say, it’s because the KNVB can not send a statement out saying…”Eeh…you’re right Edgar… Sorry…”.
By the way, Davids read in that infamous comparison between him and Jan Wouters that his international career is over. He expected van Basten to tell him that in person at least, after all the big games Davids played for Oranje… And the man’s got a point there, to say the least…
To be continued…

As I said before, know it is important to work hard for EC. What are you doing men? Do you want to change the coach? Do you thing that the problem is Marco? As a fan, I don’t think so. Only 2 years to EC and another change will be harmful for Holand because when you are trying to accuse Van Basten, other national teams are training hard to evaluate good results at EC. I agree that his management is not as good as his plays but he did his best and every one can help him not by critical words. So, I hope Mr. Van Basten work better at next matches to show that he is the best choice for coaching. Marco! try hard to change the ideas around yourself and show that Holland will be one of the best teams at EC.

Its been a while since i visited this site, and when i did, i noticed davids letter. When i read it, i could feel a bit of his anger, and disagreement for not being chosen in this world cup, because he nows he will have no chance for the next world cup. Davids refers to mistakes, and ofcourse, any coach makes them. Its human, a man learns from its mistakes. We keep the same coach. Look at him, even though all his ‘mistakes’, look what he did with the team, look what he achieved as an unexperienced coach. I do not blame david for his comments, i partly agree on most of them, but time will learn. Van BAstens class will come with experience and age. He did great this world cup, and i truly support him. As for edgar, you have had a wonderful career, you scored beautifull goals, but all must come to an end. Cheers, and thanks Jan and Mike for this excelent blog!

I have a question about the midfield: Will Sneijder, van der vaart get better with more experience or should Van Basten & his staff start experimenting with the lineup/positioning a bit in the next couple of friendlies?

@ Mah
I think we should hang on to v Basten and be happy that we have him, but I do hope he will have learned from all this and takes the lessons with him into next events. Oh, and it would be nice if he would say” I made a mistake” every now and then ![]()
@Martijn
It was our pleasure!!
@Richard
I certainly think so. vd Vaart normally does play much better (I compare him to a combination of Zidane and Del Pierro, although not yet that good), but he suffered from his injury and lack of rhythm. So yeh, Vaart, no problemo. Sneijder was a huge talent when he just arrived at the scene, but two years down the road he hasn’t progressed and is now a question mark at Ajax. So, who knows…

Van Basten might have made mistakes, but he did right throwing out Davids. And he is right about Van Bommel being uncoachable. Players like Van Bommel and Davids, and Roben are disgrace to Holland. Holland was always my second team after England, but because of players like these I sometimes hate to support them. I think Holland has very good potential and I am looking forward to times when they lift WC. I think Van Basten is the right coach, and if you give him more time, he will say his word. For God’s sake if Riijkard made a coach why Van Basten cannot be one.
The only mistake he made I think is not putting Nistelroj against disgusting Portuguese

It’s easy to say that he made mistake when leaving Ruud. We don’t know if Ruud could score if he played this match. The fact is that our midfield is bad and we can’t dominate the opponent. But we also don’t have excellent players right now, just potential players and we know that we have to take risk when chose the young coach. We all waited so long for winning Euro and World Cup, but don’t put much pressure on our young players and young coach.
