Dutch classic and English derby: boys vs men…

September 21st, 2009 | By: Jan | 26 Comments »

I watched two highly entertaining matches this weekend: Arsenal vs Wigan and Man United vs Manchester City. Top class football. High paced, gritty, tough, intense. And great goals.

Then I watched the top game between two Dutch behemoths and got bored pretty quickly. Passing precision is so-so, pace of the game is under par, quality defending isn’t there… And I would normally be very excited to watch since my fave team plays, but if I was a neutral spectator I’d probably switch to Spongebob Squarepants or something like that…

Feyenoord lost at home against a tough, tight and discplined PSV. And that’s that. Koevermans scored two goals thanks to Feyenoord’s mediocre defending and Otman Bakkal scored a beauty for PSV. Slory scored a nice 1-2 all in the first half. In the second half, PSV was too tired to be able to create anything while Feyenoord was basically not able to. Bad passing, lots of running, clueless ideas… A sorry state the Dutch competition is in. Wijnaldum, Vlaar, Biseswar, De Guzman… I’m sorry fellow Oranje fans… Maybe for 2012?

Danny Koevermans: “It looked like a routine win, but it wasn’t. We all worked very hard for this result. We wanted to create more in the second half, but we simply couldn’t. Our defense played a top game. Feyenoord hasn’t been able to threaten us at all in the second half.”

Jon Dahl Tomasson however: “PSV too good? Forget it! We gave the goals away. Big mistakes. If we hadn’t looked at a 0-2 score line after 20 minutes, we could have done something ourselves. But PSV won because we failed, not because they were great or something…”.

Rutten was happy. He had a good week with his team. PSV now leads with FC Twente (McClaren’s lads won away in Heerenveen) and Mario Been was pretty casual about it. “PSV was simply too good for us today. That’s how it is. We’ve lost one game now. It had to happen one day. We’ll try not to lose the lesson.”

Suarez, I mean Ajax, won the VVV away game 4-0. All goals by the Ajax skipper. Jol: “He scored four and he didn’t even play well…”.

Now it’s PSV and Twente on top, Ajax number 3, Feyenoord number 4, Utrecht number 5, AZ Alkmaar 6 and ADO Den Haag (!) at number 7…

The biggest news – as far as I’m concerned – was Ruud van Nistelrooy’s comeback for Real Madrid: one assist and one goal. Go Ruud!

Ruud van Nilstelrooij, class act and undeniable living legend. Hope he starts clogging up game time and score goals for fun again.

Nearly a goal per game for every league (EPL and La Liga ain’t too shabby) he has played is certainly something to be proud of.

Hope he comes back to give us PSV fans one last season(s) of goals for delight before retiring. That’s on the assumption he doesn’t injure his leg and sit on the bench for another full season…

And Roy Makaay looks like a shadow of his past… subbing in in half time… might consider retiring or transfering to a new club soon?

Gee…6 weeks…

Just read that one the last day Adabayor was at Arsenal he stole all the players’ shoes! His manager would later say: “He did it for the poor kids in Africa who can’t afford shoes, but he regrets it…”

He was just renamed to Ruud van certain Gol. :(

6 weeks, ah well, at least it’s not months. Still enough time before the WC.

Lol, when Ruud got the ball he shot it so fast that the keeper didn’t even seem to realise that the ball had already gone between his legs into goal.

BTW Feyenoord made the same mistakes they made in earlier matches, only PSV did punish them for it. Vlaar said he became very tired when Feyenoord started to play all or nothing with only 3 defenders, and that was pretty soon, and he basically had to handle RCB and RB on his own. He admitted it wasn’t a good match for him, at least he’s honoust.
Thought he did slow down visibly, I can’t say Ooijer looked that much faster. Besides Vlaar showed he can at least deliver long passes just as well as Ooijer. Anyway I wouldn’t take it too heavy, I still think he’s a very good player.
But I can remember more than enough of these kind of bad matches and results from a certain Thomas Vermaelen, and he seems to fit in fine at top level.

PS Does anyone else like the look of the black PSV outfit.

Also, anyone else notice Erik Pieters has bounced back a bit from his plunge last season?

@ Jan
I’ve seen some pretty dreadful games in the EPL too. Actually a lot of them. Serie A is even worse in terms of excitement – no wonder their stadiums are empty. The Eredivisie is (i believe) still good value and for most part, especially this year, you have no idea who is gonna win the league. The ball is round and football isn’t perfect. Clearly the eredivisie sells off their talent too soon. My point is that I find the randomness of the league really exciting. Where is the fun in watching when you know the result.

We have to cut the Eredivisie some slack because next to the Bundasliga its the only questionmark that has no clear answers, all the other leagues aren’t really competitions anymore because of the money involved…

EPL ManU & Chelsea – clear winners
Ligue 1 – Lyon & Bordeaux
Spain – Barca / Real Stupide
Serie A – Inter & Inter

For me, best bang for the buck is Germany, second Eredivise complete with their bad passing, slow build up and hopeful long balls. Every so often you get to see something real special. If the Eredivise started to promote themselves better perhaps the money would be there to keep the players and the quality would go up and players would want to play in holland.

so the general feeling is that our first team should not include anyone from the eredivisie bcuz the league is much worse?

only van der wiel and stekelenberg should stay in the team?

I wouldn’t go that far, at least De Zeeuw, Afellay, V.d.Wiel, Stekelenburg, and I still refuse to rule out Vlaar, Schaars and Marcellis for oranje.

Those are also players that will be leaving the eredivisie most likely (escept maybe de zeeuw) in the coming couple of years.

@Jason

If you really want to watch the most “exciting” league for your standards, go for the Brazilian league. Absolutely unpredictable, cause everyone is so close to each other. Sao Paulo’s stats kind of fool people for the recent seasons, but look at a broader picture and you’ll see pretty much different champions for different seasons.

German league’s still got FC Hollywood, so unpredictable but also predictable in some way.

And I second your comment, absolutely love the away kit. Though there are speculations on the internet saying Nike being lazy and tweaking the Croation design, but the Brabant flag is that colour, what are you going to do about the strip of red stripes?

@Jason, you are right ofcourse. I get carried away sometimes, right after my team losing :-) .

But it’s true: the Italian and English competition is not all roses. Some horrible games there too. And at least in Holland there’s space and time for some good skilled action and tactically it’s not that bad too.

So, yeah. The Eredivisie is a interesting competition, also with Twente coming up now and all that.

But, Feyenoord-Man United will end in something like 0-8 at the moment…

And another things that’s true, is that Ferdinand and Foster made some horrible mistakes. Come to think of it, most goals bar Bellamy’s distance strike were terrible defending mistakes…

I do think some Eredivisie players can step up to the plate. Van der Wiel and De Zeeuw have been mentioned. I think it also applies to Schaars and Afellay.

De Guzman, Fer and Co. will need much more consistency. Good players deliver in big matches when the team needs them. De Guzman scored three nice distance goals recently, but against PSV, 1-3 down and 20 minutes to go, he couldn’t do it.

Emanuelson is the best dutch LB at the moment , it would unfair not to call him and call GIO who really started to show his age !!
i’d say emanuelson and bouma or brafhied if he started to show his worth in bayern munchen .
i may find someone telling me ” gio is a must in the team due to his experience ” but we have methijsen and boulahrouz , bomel also can play in this defense .
heitinga was selected in EPL team in the last round , he played as a center back , and really did great
my selection in the defense is
bommel , bouma , emanuelson , heitinga , boulahrouz , mathijsen , VDW and loovens

emnuelson_________bommel _________ mathijsen_____________boulahrouz

subs. :
bouma___________heitinga _________ loovens ______________ weil

how about it ??

Huntelaar has not scored for Milan since his move from Madrid. I am worried he will be benched for the rest of the season.

@Mohmmed and co (whoever doubts Hunter)
First of you all have to understand that hunter is a finisher not a playmaker or assister.
Hunter needs good ball supply and some brilliance around him.AC milan is filled with oldies,he doesnt get any good service from them, even patto also struggling…..it will continue still they recruit some hardworking and brilliant 26 year olds .So dont have to wonder about AC Milan and Hunter…..OK

Tiju: i know that he’s a finisher, but he has to proove something in biggedr leagues as well. let’s see – alfonso alves was great in the eeredivisie and drastically failed in the pl. huntelaar didn’t impress at madrid. was it his coach’s mistake? maybe. probably. he had the chance to change club and he went to a topclub with creative midfielders like pirlo and seedorf. sure, pirlo is no more as brilliant as he used to be,but clarence is still world class. i think even without kaka they have enough creativity. how do you explain that clarence’s passes are good for pippo inzaghi (who scored twice against marseille) and not good (??) for huntelaar? hopefully he will improve, but i do not think that the lacking creativity would be the problem. in my opinion pato is as overestimated as huntelaar.

Mohamed – you just gave Hunter the perfect nickname if he doesnt score goals and is just a fraction late in getting into position “Huntelaat” is a brilliant play on Dutch words. – Sort of means “Hunt too Late”. Well Done Buddy !!

The last I’ve seen of Huntelaar he was not patient enough for a goal. It seems he’s afraid to lose every little chance he gets so he goes for goal immediately instead of the way he did it before that, first SEE the goal, then execute regardless if it takes a few extra touches. His vision and patience for this is gone at the moment. He wants to score right away (or at least make it look good, with a fine shot on target, regardless if the keeper can easily stop it, not consciously of course, that happens in your subconscious when the pressure is so much on him right now).

I have to admit I haven’t seen his last game.
