Drente moves to Real Madrid: Sneijder on the list!

August 9th, 2007 | By: Jan | 11 Comments »

Real Madrid made it official. They’ve reached an agreement with Feyenoord and Royston Drenthe. The 20 year old talent moves for 5 seasons to the Spanish champion. Real Madrid upped their bid (from 12.5 Mio to 14 Mio) and Feyenoord happily said “yes”. Drenthe already threatened to go to court if Feyenoord would block his move and all parties seem to be happy. And as Goose told us (a couple of times): you never know if you’ll have the chance to sell him for that kind of money next season. Funnily enough is that what Drenthe also said: “It’s a tough choice to make, but I can’t say know to this huge adventure… When Real Madrid comes…what do you do?”

Drenthe will fight for Roberto Carlos position in the team.

Insiders also claim that Real Madrid has lost interest in Arjen Robben but is seriously eyeing the services of Wesley Sneijder. Apparently, Madrid made Ajax a huge offer: 24 Mio Euros. Wes wants to go (of course), Ajax wants the money but the fans won’t like it if Wesley moves away and Henk ten Cate will probably be furious…

Suarez, the FC Groningen striker, went to court to undo his FC Groningen-contract and move to Ajax, but yesterday the court decided that FC Groningen has legitimit reasons to ask their price. No transfer, you’d say. But a day later, Suarez is sold to Ajax anyway… for 8 Mio Euros.

Roberto Carlos is at Fenerbache now. Robben is always close to signing but never does. If Sneijder plays in the CL for Ajax this Wednesday the 15th, will that disqualify him from playing CL games for any other team this year? I can’t see him leaving after committing to stay(press conference and all) for another year at Ajax. Of course, I guess players do this all the time right?

If he plays for Ajax, then he cannot play for any team this year in the CL.

Correct. That’s why he said he won’t leave after having played for Ajax on that date in that match. So, Real needs to move fast.

I wonder if Robben can stay at Chelsea if Real decides not to go all the way for him. I expect Mourinho to give Robben the cold shoulder…

Real not interested in Robben anymore? That’s not what I’ve seen:

My own guess is still that Chelsea does NOT want to let Robben go.

They’ll not make him a starter - but boy without Robben coming off the bench it would be a lot easier for Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool to set their defences against Chelsea. Shut down Essian and Drogba won’t see much.

also heared Robben is as good as gone though im sure that they dont want him to go, seen some stats (here??) wich shows that every game he doenst start Chelsea have problem scoring (and winning), it would also be a bit harsh on Chelsea if Robben would go and stayed injury free.. last year was pretty bad with injuries and im sure Chelsea would want a fit robben to play this season…think as a pro it would not be a problem if he was not to go…hes a good player and can win games so Mourinho will not have a problem

my symathie goes out to Ferenc..with a bit of luck we can have vanNistelrooy, Drenthe, Sneijder and Robben at Real.. only Rijkaard at Barca..difficult times for our friend!

well, im of to the first game of the season in our new stadion (courtesy of going down,… playing first division on a friday!! god#####

Looks like Ajax will play hard-ball with Madrid:

And they should :-). 14 Mio for Drenthe and “only” 24 for Sneijder?

Wednesday is an important match for Ajax and they - rightfully - say: if Real is too late we will use Sneijder in that game.

I think Real can’t blame Ajax.

Van Geel @ Ajax already stated that “it is not unthinkable Sneijder goes” and “Wesley really wants to move”… Ten Cate said: “we should be proud if Ajax sells his playmaker to Real Madrid” and “we will still go for the title”…

Interesting stuff. Players getting sold. In North American Hockey, Basketball, Football and Baseball, selling players is rare. Teams usually trade and demand players in return. Players can become “free agents” at a certain time in their career when their contract runs out, the can then go to the highest bidder with the former team getting nothing. It is usually latter in the career, depending on the collective bargening aggreement between the players union and the owners.

According to TSN.ca, and Sportsnet.ca Robben’s already been signed by Madrid.
