Don’t count Ruud out

March 6th, 2006 | By: Matt | No Comments »

The Dutch manager Marco van Basten has been very cagy about his striker situation. After Dirk Kuyt’s goal against Equador he claims to be considering who to start up front. This of course threatens Ruud van Nistelrooy’s position, but I woulnd’t get too worried if I was Ruud. This sounds like a bit of lip service from van Basten. Kuyt just won the game for Holland, van Basten was obligated to take his goal into consideration. Anything less would be unappreciative of Kuyt’s accomplishment.

Don’t believe the hype, Ruud will start in Germany. Kuyt scored one hell of a goal against Equador, but it was only one goal. How many spectacular goals has Ruud scored for the Holland over the years? I’m still haunted by his imposible volly from Euro 2004. I think Kuyt earned himself a ticket to Germany with his heroics, but not a starting position.

It’s time for a little communication from van Basten. Let Ruud know his spot is safe. He has had one hell of a week and cound use the encouragement. He is a leader and has a wealth of experiance. Both are very important when fielding a very young side. If van Nistelrooy slips a bit in the opening match, put him on the bench. I know Kuyt is the new exciting Dutch striker to watch, but two months ago everyone said that about Ryan Babel. You know van Nistelrooy will produce for you, give him your vote of confidence and end this moral crushing speculation
