@Bob; ofcourse we want vanBasten to be as good as Cruijff was (as a manager) but he just isnt

its true that being a famous player has pro and negatives; the fact his players respect him is cause of his past; the fact that hes manager is cause of his past; the reason the press let him of the hook is cuase of his past, the only negative i can think of is the one you name; expectations...but any manager who becomes Bondscoach should have to live with expectations

i really dont know why the KNVB got in this 'lets appoint a manager with no experience'mood, remember it started with Rijkaard.. were will it end; next Bondscoach: FdeBoer..mark my words!!

Jan, this statement regarding van Basten is the reason we keep coming back to read, and learn and think. A very nice analysis, which is accurate, truth-filled and direct--all very Dutch qualities!
One of van Basten's problems is living up to the level he reached when playing, as a yardstick for measuring his success and skills as a coach. I think we want him to be, as Cruyff was, gifted as a coach as well as a player. His record is commendable and, considering the current level of talent, reflective of the potential of his team. Strategically and tactically he does not seem very astute. However,it seems that the players respect him ( a valuable quality ) and are willing to work within his system. In the end, there are many more talented and competent coaches/trainers in the Netherlands than van Basten, and perhaps that is the greatest frustration of all--why did the KNVB not appoint the best the Dutch have to offer at this time?

Goose.

I'm not very happy with Van Baasten either. I don't see him doing much imaginative. And do see him being incredibly stubborn.

Oranje has been fairly lucky in lots of games - great players have bailed the team out.

And I agree trying to squeeze players who train under different systems into a 4-3-3 wastes too much energy.

@SK; well, nothing bad can be sais about the results (maybe 1-0 agaisnt Lux; Alb; isnt that great a result) but the problem i have is that there is no progress, there hasnt been any in years...nothing can be said about the results but how about Marco still hanging on to his beloved 4-3-3 which has proven not to work with the players we have at the moment (esp. when you have so little balance as you say)

great piece Jan, looks like they get better and better..always great to play the devils advocate eh?!

grtz

btw; vanBasten should be sacked!!

Exellent Post. Marco and his national team needed to get 6 points - and they got them.

Although Van Baasten appears to be a lousy communicator and not-so-hot on on-field tactics, we don't see anyone else clammering for the coaching slot. Sorta blame Cruyff for that - why didn't he take the mantle for a couple of years with Van Baasten as an assistant rather than just pushing Van Baasten too fast?

Third, Holland doesn't have a well balanced talent pool right now. Great talent up front - great goalie. But no good stoppers on defense - and no great passers from back there.

Hope that Gio steps back and Drenthe steps up at Real. Would be nice to have a whole string of guys who practice together on one side of the field - Drenthe, Schnijder, Robben and Van N.

Great post as usual. Personally there are times when I'm charmed by Marco's idealism and naiveté, but then he blunders once again and it makes me scratch my head. If Oranje do well in 08 it will most certainly be in spite of Marco. The squad short comings you pointed out Jan can only be overcome by tactics and team play. Dazzling defenders are not going to pop out of the tulip fields before next summer, so Marco had better book himself into a few "Leadership" seminars in Vegas pronto.
