De Guzman wants a Dutch passport

November 13th, 2007 | By: Jan | 4 Comments »

Canadian super talent Jonathan de Guzman, the dynamic Feyenoord midfielder, has decided he wants a Dutch passport. The youngster is 5 years in Holland now and should pass the exams easily. He speaks Dutch fluently, is totally assimilated and, according to coach Bert van Marwijk, he is “an enrichment for Dutch football”.

However, he hasn’t decided yet that he will play for Oranje!

“I want a Dutch passport because I feel partly Dutch and because it makes life easier. I haven’t decided if I want to be able for Oranje yet. Obviously, Oranje can play for prizes. For Canada, that’s a bit tougher. But on the other hand, does Oranje need me? The thought of playing for Canada with my brother (who currently plays for Deportivo de la Coruna in Spain and who decided to play for Canada) is exciting too. We can be important for Canada, I hope, and that in itself is a fantastic reason to play for the country I was born. I need some time to figure this out….”

I hope he picks Holland. He is very talented and could be the natural successor to Clarence Seedorf when he calls it a day.

I think he’ll pick Canada, because its easier to make the Canadian team for him, even though the Oranje are in need of midfielders right now. He would be good playing with sneidjer, and van der vaart, after seedorf is gone. He could be a Canadian legend though, among the top scorers in their history, as opposed to the dutch team, where he would get minimum time.

I hope he’ll pick Canada. I think it’s important for Canadian football for talents like him to help develop the sports. He’ll make good money in Europe, fine, but he needs to help support sports in his own country. Think Giggs for Wales and Litmanen for Finland. These boys will never shine on a big tournament, but their development work is important for future generations. I think De Guzman should take that responsibility.

And, I bet he will….
