De Guzman in pre-selection Oranje

Bert van Marwijk congratulated Jonathan de Guzman before the Tuesday training. The future Oranje manager had heard of the midfielder’s selection for Oranje. The born Canadian was totally surprised. “I chose to play for Holland, but never expected to be given the chance this early. We are not impressing at the moment with Feyenoord. But this is a great new challenge. I am thrilled.”

Dirk Kuyt, left out for the Croatia match, is also back in the preliminary selection, for the Austria match on March 26 in Vienna.

Robin van Persie is back too. Arjen Robben (ankle) is obviously not selected.

Preliminary selection:

Goal: Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United), Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax), Henk Timmer (Feyenoord)

Defense: Wilfred Bouma (Aston Villa), Tim de Cler (Feyenoord), Urby Emanuelson (Ajax), John Heitinga (Ajax), Kew Jaliens (AZ), Joris Mathijsen (Hamburger SV), Mario Melchiot (Wigan Athletic), André Ooijer (Blackburn Rovers)

Midfield: Ibrahim Afellay (PSV), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), Jonathan de Guzman (Feyenoord), Nigel de Jong (Hamburger SV), Denny Landzaat (Feyenoord), Hedwiges Maduro (Valencia), David Mendes da Silva (AZ), Clarence Seedorf (AC Milan), Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid), Rafael van der Vaart (Hamburger SV), Demy de Zeeuw (AZ)

Strikers: Ryan Babel (Liverpool), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Ajax), Danny Koevermans (PSV), Dirk Kuijt (Liverpool), Ruud van Nistelrooij (Real Madrid), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (Celtic).

How long is Robben supposed to be out?

Anyways I think starting eleven will be

—————–stekeleneburg———————-
—-melchiot—-heitinga—-mathijsen—-de cler—-
————–de zeeuw—van bronkhorst———-
van der vaart———-v.persie———sneijder
——————van nistelrooy——————–

I don’t think we’ll end up using van der Sar. I figure at the half we’ll make subs of

emanuelson for de cler
huntelaar for van nistelrooy
babel for sneijder
de guzman for van der vaart
timmer for stekelenburg

Good line-up. Robben will be out for a month, I believe. Ruud has resumed training, but he’ll let this friendly go, I think. As will Sar, indeed. Huntelaar will play for Ruud.

I actually don’t like that de Guzman is in the lineup, I think he should be playing the u-21’s, like all of the other talent available to the dutch team. It seems unfair that he decides to play for the team and gets called up for the next friendly, when other players have been working towards this for years, and have yet to be called up.

Where’s Kromkamp!!!, he was outstanding last week against Spurs. Is De Guzman ready for the senior team?.

You’re right! where’s Kromkamp?? I think something happened between Kromkamp and Bassie. He plays great at the moment. I do think De Guzman is ready, but with all the great midfielders we have I agree with Goose (De Gooseman :-) ) that we don’t really need him.

Blaurgh, who cares about De Guzman. Landzaat!

I also reckon Kromkamp should be in there due to his recent form. He was good against the Spurs.

How about Melchiot? What is he like at the moment? I haven’t seen him in action since he was at Chelsea, and i think that it was about 2004 that he left…. Unless you have Foxtel in Australia you can’t see anything but tiny highlights of most matches from around the world GRRRRR!!! Luckily i got to watch the PSV-Spurs match though.

Melchiot is not only a starter but also a captain at wigan.. i think he is decent, and our best right back at the moment.

I just had to read it. Oops.

(This isn’t as bad as the kerfuffle that happened with Owen Hargreaves in Canada. Everyone was mad, people at his youth club that I faced against when I was younger thought they were too awesome for words. But I certainly remember many people interviewed were like “Good for him…but why didn’t he stay? Geez” type comments)

On De Guzman, I thought he had played for the Canadian team before? Or am I completely mistaken?

melchiot had a great game last weekend against arsenal and seemed to be able to read the play well and always be at the right place at the right time to make crucial defensive interventions.
@Dirk, I like your thinking (line-up and subs) but i would put Affelay in before de Guzman.
And i agree with everyone, I think that Kromkamp should get a second chance in Oranje. Marco originally critized him for leaving for big clubs where he wouldn’t get to play regularly (villareal, liverpool) but now he’s been back with PSV for a while plays regulary and is playing better than last year, so in my opinion he’s earned a recall.

He had a recall already when at PSV I believe, but something doesn’t “click” between him and Marco, me thinks…

ha ha
some asholes came back
kuyt,jaliens,kovermans etc
Raijkard, klinsman have 80 years of experience and franc won champions league and la liga consecqutively.
while klinsman managed an average talented team to semis of WC2006.
ha ha so we selected van marwijk.
old toothless lions should give the way for drenthe, castelen,de gauzman etc.
its too pitty these two guys castelen and drenthe getting dropped.
Ze dorf he is fit and suitable for AC milan not suitable with our present team(sorry ze dorf).
this guy cannt deliver wonder for us 1000 crore percentage assured.
Even our znijder do nt have the penetrating skill of castelen.
Drenthe we should use him in the mid instead of van bronk and van bronk should go back to his previous position
its pitty we considering drenthe as aleft back give him enough freedom and get the gold.
