Davids is Critical

July 4th, 2006 | By: Mike | 6 Comments »

Former Dutch midfielder Edgar Davids was very unimpressed by the Netherlands’ performance in the match against Portugal in which they were eliminated. I really hope his comments aren’t a result of bitter or negative feelings. I’m not a proponent of how either set of players acted on the night but I would expect Davids to be a little more cautious with his words, not because of who he is but because of surrounding circumstances of the squad. It is a young team who weren’t expected to do as well as they did. I sincerely hope that bad feelings won’t haunt future meetings between the Dutch and Portuguese in the future. There is nothing I would like more than to fairly beat them the next time around.

Keep dreaming Mikey, Holland will never beat Portugal if they continue playing like that.

What happened to the playing styles of the Dutch in 98? 2000? Now that side was worthy of winning anything.

let’s first say that it’s easy for aynone to say these things when watching the game on tv. It did look dreadful. But when on the pitch, I think you get dragged into that type of play. It was not just the refs fault, or the Portuguese fault, it was a combination of circumstances, one being Bommel’s first challenge in the 2nd minute and Boulah’s charge on Sissy Ronaldo. And Davids should be the last to comment on this match :-) . As for the “what happened to” question… In my view, the difference between playing great football and being sucked into this type of fight is small. Really small. We played great on the EC2000 but ended up empty-handed…

Jan: sure, oranje ended up empty-handed voth on the wc98 and ec2000 but that time the team pleyed beautiful an dominant football (even against bresil in 98) and being in the best 4 team (98,2000,2004 – last time with not that beautiful football) is not the same as being eliminated in the 16… i hope this team will mature and perform better than the 98/2000 but edgar davids did so much for the dutch and the international football,so he can criticize the manner we lost against this cheaters…

i hope marco will be a great coach, and build a very dominant team. btw when people are talking about him this is always ec88 but we dorget wc90 – an even bigger fiasco than this year… (and also with marco)

I think his words are bullshit. Sorry Davids !!

If you didnt see innocent (referring to the article) football by the dutch in this wc then theres really no point in continuing a discussion. Cuz in my opinion they played the most innocent and honest football ive seen them play in years..

When we beat Arg in 98, there was innocence??? Hell no!! Davids was a bull running around intimidating everyone on the argentinean side.. How did ortega get sent off ?? by his and his teammates’ craftiness during the game..

So.. no .. i really dont buy what davids is saying right now. im sorry.
Please do not confuse between underpeforming and not playing innocent and honest dutch football.

According to Davids’ open letter – posted yesterday – he never gave this interview and he does not agree with what it says. Davids is critical alright, but not on the way Oranje handled the Portuguese. He didn’t even think Oranje played rough. No, Davids is critical on van Basten. At last, a Dutch rift is born…
