Czar Guus does it again…

October 18th, 2007 | By: Jan | No Comments »

Let’s not forget Guus :-).

As team manager of Russia, Guus Hiddink has given the Russians one of the best football nights ever. The man has a monopoly on these things. With the 2-1 victory over favorites England, the door to the EC2008 is wide open.

With two duels to go, Israel and Andorra, Russia has it in their own hands now. England will have to play and win against Croatia, who top the group.
If Russia wins twice, Hiddink can prepare for his 5th big tournament.

In the Luzhniki Stadium, with 80.000 fans watching, Russia won heroically after a 0-1 score. Rooney had scored a beauty and w ith that result, England was safe. But two golden subs and some tactical changes - communicated by assistant and former Barcelona and Feyenoord star Igor Korneev - the team totally changed the game around.

Rooney fouled Zyryanov and substiture Pavly scored from the spot. England looked weaker and weaker and four minutes later, the same Pavly scored the 2-1. The joyful dance and celebration at the touch line, with Hiddink in the middle, showed who again he managed to bond with his players.

Despite the language barriere, Hiddink executed another Russian revolution. He selected young talents and made them play attacking football.

Hiddink’s contract has been opened up already and extended to the WC 2010. Ajax recently informed if the ex-PSV and Real Madrid coach would be interested in taking over from Ten Cate but the magician said he was having too much fun in Moscow.
