Cruyff: Van Persie is right!

June 13th, 2006 | By: Jan | 5 Comments »

This is Johan Cruyff’s formal statement after the match…

“I have a positive feeling after watching the Dutch play. Obviously, some things went wrong, but what can you expect… For most lads it is the first match at this level and there will be time to correct these wrongs. It’s better to focus on all the positive elements. One of the big wins was the fact that the team stayed calm and disciplined in the organisation, particularly in defense. They didn’t have an easy game, but they were there for each other. This group is really growing into a strong team. Look at the way Bouhla, Kuyt and Landzaat played themselves in the team. Bouhla was all business from the word go, Kuyt didn’t show any nerves and Landzaat added football to our tired midfield. It’s good to see how Kuyt and Bouhla – who were surefire starters some weeks ago! – accepted their new position in the group and gave their all when asked upon.

That’s also positive with van Persie. He wasn’t involved that much, due to Robben’s great form. And van Persie is typically a player who always wants the ball. His remark showed that he didn’t like to be left out.

A few years ago, he would have become a nuisance. Now, he kept on playing in his role, doing what he needed to do. He was there to keep the field wide, and he didn’t neglect his defensive tasks. A major change for wonderkind and enfant terrible Robin van Persie.

And that criticism after the match? I don’t care about that. I don’t even think it’s criticism, but more a remark of a guy who wants to win and wants to exploit every single aspect the team has to offer. And in that way, he’s right! Although Robben was superb, there were situations where he should have passed the ball to mates who were in a better position. The fact that Ruud didn’t play all too well has also to do with the lack of playable balls from the wings. But anyway, I don’t see it as criticism. If you want to do really well on this WC, you need to be sharp! And these types of remarks keeps everybody on their toes.

In the past, it happened too often that after one good match, everybody thought all was hunky dory and that bit of relaxation in the minds would then be enough for the next opponent to butcher us. I don’t think this will happen now, maybe partly thanks to van Persie’s realism in the euforia of our first win…”

Let me tell you… There’s not a lot else you can when he talks… :-) . Famous the anecdotes of Cruyff getting in a cab in the US and actually telling the cabbie how to drive!! He’d never been in that city before!!! The man is raving mad, but he knows his football :-)

he guys, here are some classic cruijff quotes..hes not only a master on the pitch…

( I seldomly make mistakes because I have troubles to be mistaken. )

( Before I make a mistake, I don’t make that mistake. )

( You only see it when you understand it. )

Elk voordeel hep z’n nadeel!
( Every advantage has its disadvantage. )

Toeval is logisch.
( Chance is logical. )

( I am against anything. Until I make a decision, then I am for it. )

( The truth is never exactly like you think it would be. )

( The biggest challange in human knowing is to understand you can not understand. )

( I don’t believe. In Spain all 22 players make a cross before coming out on the field, so if that worked all games would end with an equal score. )

( Football is simple but the hardest thing there is, is to play simple football. )

( Now there is unity, everyone does more or less like I ask. There are no Dutch that when they start breathing say: yes, but… )

( When you have the best player for each position, you do not have a strong team, but a team that falls apart like dry sand. )

( You just have to make sure to score one goal more as your opponent. )

( If we have possesion, they can’t score. )

Hun verdediging was geitenkaas.
( Their defence was goatcheese. )

Bergkamp speelde ver onder nul.
( Bergkamp played far below zero. )

( The Argentines can’t win but you can loose to them, that’s only logical. )

( If you want to play faster, you could run harder, but in fact the ball determines the speed of play. )

( What is speed? Often the press confuses speed for insight. See, when I start running a bit earlier then anyone else, I look faster. )

( Would he have walked 2 meters earlier, it would have been a goal)

( In football things are simple: you are either on time or too late. If you are too late, you have to make sure to start on time. )

( If you are 4-0 in front and you have 10 minutes to play, you’d better shoot two balls on the bar so that people can say ‘oooh’ and ‘aaah’, because if you make 5-0, it is just for the score. )

( If you need fast ballcirculation, you can’t have players running with the ball. You only can walk with the ball to give someone else time to get somewhere else. )
