Column Van Hanegem: stop the foolishness in Oranje!

Let’s all stop with that talking about Van der Sar’s return and let’s focus on important things. Like the behaviour on the pitch of our players! I can’t help but think that some of the lads are a bit overstressed. That’s the only conclusion I can draw when I look at those silly fouls by De Jong and Sneijder. That is just stupid.
And we should cover these mistakes up. Like saying they might be frustrated. So what? What would it be like if all players who aren’t feeling too good start chopping up opponents. This is something we need to rule out pronto! When they do this at the WC, you’ll get a series of red cards and then it’s over.
I heard Van Marwijk addressed this aggressively in the dressing room and that’s a good thing. These things are killing.
And all that in the week of that dreadful dreadful assault by that Witsel of Standard Luik. How can you do this? I wasn’t an ideal son in law on the pitch and if someone dared to touch Moulijn or Cruyff, I’d seek him out and hand out a cookie. But I’ve never purposely kicked someone into hospital. It might not have been that bloke’s intention, but it’s clear when you look at the broadcast that he was out to hurt that player.
For me, there’s a simple rule. Suspend the guy as long as the other player is injured. And that guy Witsel was flabbergasted to be red-carded, even. Unbelievable!
Ok, back to our goalies. I don’t think we have an issue. Stekelenburg is a good goalie and so are Vorm and Velthuizen. Or are they clowns? People say Vorm and Velthuizen lack international experience. Huh? What does that mean? Are the balls different at that level? Square? Is the goal bigger?
Van der Sar is a nice guy and a tremendous goalie, but let’s leave him be. If he wants to go to the WC, he’ll tell us. Otherwise we’ll get another tv-program, to convince Sar to come along. But then with a funny bon-mot. I can’t wait.
Argentina, I’m a fan of their national team, will have a hard time qualifying for the WC after the defeat against Brazil. Now people will say Maradona is a clown, but I don’t think that’s the case. It’s not so much about the coach, but the personalities of the players. I think the Argentinian ego’s might be too inflated and some players think they’re too good to work for the team.
Which is the strength of Barcelona. And Spain. They played Belgium sick last Saturday. It was 5-0 but could have easily been 10-0.
Spain has a tremendous team but Belgium isn’t too bad with all those talents. I think Dick Advocaat will be able to gel a team out of these talents, and when he does, Belgium will be back at the highest level. Kompany, Dembele, Martens, Vertonghen, Vermaelen… Good names.
And lastly, our women’s team. What a shame they lost that game against England but kudos for their performance. I must be honest, I didn’t like womens football. When I worked at Oranje I sometimes saw them train and it was simply pathetic. But times have changed. I now see situations on the pitch and think: hellooo….
And that’s for a large part the work of our passionate ambassador Vera Pauw.

HI Jan,my greeting to n all Oranje Fans,
I have a thing in my mind n that is after the defeated by the Russia in the European cup 2006,I think Holland team still need to train more in different kind of information instead of just keep sticking with 4231.I can’t imagine that if oranje repeated history again just like in 2006,playing excellent football but if some teams manage to break us down in the 4231.By then if we r well trained n 433 or 442 ects,we can be flexible to handle them in second half. This is my concerns.
What do u guys think ???

i agree with vhanegem we need to have confident in our current keepers.
the best way to beat south american team like brazil is 4-3-3 with 2 speedy wingers(elia and robben) and a fox in the box. agaisnt european team, 4-2-3-1.

Hey lights, that’s ok man… And you didn’t miss me in your greetings!
Greetings back.
I think you’ll need to be able to play 3 systems at the time and I think 4-2-3-1 does that. This is how you start, but you can easily switch to 4-5-1 (counter attack, tight field postitioning) or 4-2-4 (when you fan out and the wingers take the…eh…wing and the shadowstriker pushes up).
These three systems need to flow.

Michel-Olivier, totally agree with you. Excellent point. In fact I was talking about this the other day and we may have to adjust the formation and the players depending who we play. Korea may not require the same formation as playing Brazil or England.

“I now see situations on the pitch and think: hellooo….”
I think the same thing when I see that one Dutch girl playing, man she’s cute! I seem to forget her name at the moment though… (and no Finn, I’m not talking about the Orange Angel! Haha).

Anouk Hoogendijk. A class act. That English program was sooo funny. “Here’s the highlights of the Dutch women team…”

Anouk looks way better than the Orange Angel. Anouk looks cute and sparkling and the Orange Angel has a more distant look (no idea how to say it).
Good game again though against the English, when the overtime started at first I thought they were never going to survive, then when there were only a few minutes left I actually started to believe they could make it to the penalties again.
Then you saw the same mistake you sometimes see in male defenders at weaker teams (like Booth at South Africa in the Confed Cup for example). The classical mistake of thinking you can solve a dangerous problem by giving away a corner. Not that that didn’t already happen a few times earlier in the game and they got away with it. And also I can completely understand Koster’s decision, cause it WAS Smith there, that dangerous one, no wonder you don’t want to take any risks and make the turn to kick the ball to the sidelines or the front.
In all fairness, they were just outclassed (especially by Smith) and it was already quite an achievement to hold out for that long, especially getting the equalizer goal back. For a minute there I thought maybe they should have tried a lot more offensively, if they can score an equalizer THAT easy. Maybe it’s all a matter of confidence.
1st half was really good, at moments I thought they were better and going to turn the match into their favor (couple of nice counters), that quickly changed in the second half.
All things considered, I’m very proud of them. They have surpassed themselves by far, too bad that this might also mean we may have to wait a long time for any success like this again.
