Cocu Retiring

April 11th, 2006 | By: Mike | 3 Comments »

Faithful servant of the Oranje, Phillip Cocu will retire from international football after this years World Cup.

CocuPhillip was born October 29, 1970 in Eindhoven. He played for AZ Alkmaar and Vitesse Arnhem before being bought by PSV where his talents and potential were realized at last. After three seasons with Eindhoven he moved to Barcelona. He made 206 appearances for the Catalans scoring 31 goals in the process. In the summer of 2004 he returned to PSV.

As an international his first cap came against a 0-1 loss to Germany on 24 March 1996. Since then he has accumulated 95 caps in all scoring 10 goals. He is currently third in caps behind Edwin Van der Sar (107) and Frank de Boer (112). He’s almost certain of reaching 100 caps for his country at this year’s tournament.

He has always been a very steady player. Tip of the cap his way for his years of service.

I think Cocu is broadly admired in Netherland for his performnce during qualifying campeign. He looks to be the centre of gravity of Bastens’ system.
May be it was just because of the situation of that time to base on defensive play.
With fully-commited squad and more demands on attacking play Bastens’ team pilosophy could be moved to more offensive mood.
Big question is Could Cocu still be at the central role at forth coming final rounds?
How do U think Pals?
