Champions League: what have we learned…

wes

1. If you take up too many projects, you can’t watch CL games :-( . Or post enough articles on the blog.

I missed a lot of action. Didn’t see anything of the CL yesterday…

2. If you can sign Van der Vaart because Xabi Alonso leaves, you should! (Mr Benitez!!)

Liverpool looks frail. Without ideas. Lucas and Mascherano as playmakers??

3. If Sneijder is half fit, you will play him. Always.

An assist and a goal…

4. If your sub scores a cracker, do not let him take a free kick straight after it.

Babel had a top goal and followed it up with a free kick that almost ended up at the half way line… What?

5. If you were the Best of the World, it doesn’t mean you will make it in Munich…

@bobotoh: barca will qualify. they have to beat inter (at camp nou) and need a draw in kiyev. i’m happy with sneijder’s performance and wish him the best but not in next cl game.

Franz Beckenbauer opened an attack on Van Bommel. “Why would you want 70% ball possession when you openly and clumsily fumble like Van Bommel did. The only player who was threatening was Robben. Schweinsteiger can be threatening too, but he saves it for Der Mannschaft.”

@Tiju: Could you post 16 a little more positive things about Oranje please? Not a great way to start the day for me. I’m going to have to kick the dog I don’t own.

i’m not worried about oranje. if you followed other teams you would consider that they have the moreless the same problems. striker? as long as van persie is so brilliant we shouldn’t care about huntelaar (in my optimal formation i don’t consider rvn in the starting 11,he would be a supersub as clarence). sneijder is in great form at inter and in oranje he’s always been better than in his clubs. vdv? he will change club in january and will be useful for oranje. kuiyt is not brilliant at the moment, but he’s always working hard and this is the main reason we need him (not his non-existing technic and goalscoring capabilities). babel was great yesterday and i still see some potential in him (more than in huntelaar). Tiju: you shouldn’t compare van bommel to xavi (xavi is a creative midfielder, van bommel is a holding midfielder),he doesn’t need to organize our game. stekelenburg improves,he’s a good goalkeeper – vds wasn’t too convincing against cska moscow. we have a very talented right back, for the left back position we have several candidates (gio, urby – ? -,brafheid,drenthe),same with the central defence. sometimes you don’t need world class full backs, more important that they should play without making any mistakes. de jong is a very good holding midfielders,on the wings we have several possibilities. more important that our players shouldn’t get injured. i’m sure that bert has a good aproach. all in all i cannot see why should we care more than other teams.

Good facts:

1. Raf, Ryan, Klaas Jan will be superfit for the WC…

2. Raf, Ryan, Klaas Jan et al will be super motivated for WC…

3. Argentina, Brazil, Spain et al will underestimate Oranje…

4. Ooijer and Gio will be given headstarts due to old age…

5. Van Persie will play center striker…

6. Boulah and Heitinga will be totally unpredictable…

7. France, Portugal, Argentina will not make it…

8. Orange Angel will do the draw and gets us in a simple group…

9. Sneijder will win the CL with Inter and ooze confidence…

10. Elia will be the surprise of the WC, with Robben as supersub

11. Van Nistelrooy will be the super sub behind Robin

20. we will win a penalty shoot out, van nistelrooy van persie kuyt will score. van der sar will stop the first three.

21. van bommel will score against germany, and run around the pitch doing the f*** you symbol(like he did against real madrid) he will get yellow carded every game he plays but never a red.

I’m not too worried either

Stekelenburg, V.d.Wiel, De Zeeuw, Afellay, Elia, De Jong, Mathijsen, Sneijder, V.Persie, Robben, need I say more, lol.

Then the ones with not optimal positions:
Braafheid, V.Bommel have done really well for oranje last times, maybe not for Bayern but I don’t care about that.
V.d.Vaart remains topclass despite not playing too much, screw Real, just take him to the WC.
Kuyt is still good, but technically will never be world-class, just deal with it.
Heitinga often plays very well as CB
Boulahrouz hardly ever dissapoints in oranje
Loovens is a good, but not spectacular defender, good reserve player
V.Nistelrooij can perform just as well for oranje with just 4 matches in a season as he can with 30, less matches probably even make it more easy for him, only officially he’s not available any more, might change though.
Schaars, still promising, but in a bit of a difficult spot now, he’ll probably move to a different club.
Mendes da Silva, least impressive player, I rated him very highly, but no more, has gotten stuck in development, reached his ceiling.
Engelaar, can’t see why he’s still picked, good for PSV, but I’d rather give talents the chance over this soon to be oldie.

Only troubling things for me are Gio, Ooijer, Huntelaar and Babel. Both attackers in a deadlock, Huntelaar doesn’t play, so can’s score any goals, won’t addapt or succeed this way.
Babel mixes absolute brilliance with dissapointment and really bad performances. I think if he would have regular playing time he’d make much bigger steps.
Gio is getting overrun by amature wingers, and Ooijer looks 90 when playing.

Still secretly hope we’ll be seeing Vlaar in the squad, not too fast but still quicker than Ooijer, and equally strong, and good, besides that Emanuelson is impressive now, but is he a LB, I think not ,but who’ll say. closer to oranje than Drenthe.

But France and Italy cope with about as much issues as we do. Not even mentioning Argentina.

Although they do reasonably well, I think Bakkal, Brama, Fer, Drenthe stand no chance, or very little chance of making the WC. Emanuelson,
Vlaar still have a slightly better chance.

24. Sneijder: skills of Maradona plus the brain of a computer (Gazzetta)
25. Van Persie: combination of Henry and Bergkamp (Wenger)
26. Robben: whenever he comes on he switches the team to fifth gear (somebody at Bayern)
