Champions League starts again!!

Yeah! That means setting the clock at 4.30 am. Having to watch the fixtures picked by ESPN and mostly not being able to watch the return games of the ones you watched a week earlier (this happens later, at the knock out stages…).

But…then again…where else can you players like Van der Vaart, Van der Sar, Afellay, Van Bommel, Van Nistelrooy, Kuyt, Babel, Robben, Heitinga, Seedorf to name just a few play at the top of their game.

And then there Gerrard, Lampard, C. Ronaldo, Raul, Ribery, Kaka, Deco, Eto’O, Torres, Culina and Fabregas to name a couple of second-tier wannabe’s…..

Great matches ahead!

And which team will prevail this time around? Will Klinsmann be able to correct the fact that Bayern wasn’t part of this last season and win it? Will Van der Vaart lead Real Madrid to the Cup with the Big Ears ™? Is it finally Robin van Persie’s turn? Will PSV win it again?

Stay tuned. And in 8 months, I will tell you exactly.

Excited? Tell me your thoughts… In the meantime, here’s some interesting factoids :-)

• Arsenal has a celebration in the away games against Kiev. The Gunners play their 100th game in the CL. They won 44 games, drew 29 times and lost 26 times.

• This season, there’s three debutants at the CL Ball: Romanian side CFR Cluj, Cyprus club Anorthosis Famagusta and Belarus side BATE Borisov.

• Liverpool can score their 100st goal against Olympique Marseille in the CL. The Reds scored 98 times until now. They needed 66 games to reach that score.

•This season, seventeen Dutch players will act in the CL. Three players make their debut: Jeffrey Leiwakabessy (Famagusta), Glenn Loovens (Celtic) and Steve Olfers (Aalborg aB).

Is it really “mancunians”? What about “manchesterers”? Or “manchestis”?

Yep, it really is Mancunians… strange name eh?

@Jan (and others) – you don’t have to be a hostage to your cable companies pick of what to show (or to waking up 4:30 AM). When I was in Japan I found that buying a match replay subscription from uefa.com worked perfectly for me. You buy the pass – used to be monthly, but now it’s only available annually (for 30 euros) – and then after midnight CET you can watch any of the day’s matches (or any older matches) streamed onto your computer. The video quality is very good and the commentary is in English (although some of the commentators tend to spoil other games a lot).

It’s very convenient because people in the Asia/Australia area are sleeping until past midnight CET anyways, so it’s not like you have to wait to watch the matches, and then you can watch the matches any time you want. It also looks like the pass covers Uefa cup this year too.

Uefa pisses me off because they are shameless money chasers (note how they removed the option to buy monthly passes because everyone cancels in the summer when there is no games to watch), but this is still a good service if you want to pay the 30 euros a year (which is still a decent price).

Mancunians are indeed weird, just like people from Glasgow are called Glaswegians, people from merseyside are scousers and people from Liverpool in particular are Liverpudlians…

In any event, CL looks like another EPL big 4 repeat. Can’t see anyone else having a real go, including Real Madrid. In a way it is getting more boring every year. The UEFA cup is quite possibly a better tournament to watch as far as the average fan goes. At least there is a bit of uncertainty involved.

If PSV had a dream that it wouldn’t be difficult, that dream was tore up against Atletico. The Boeren had more goal shots, more possession… but Agüero, how lethal he’s being! Now, let’s work, Stevens! At least, Afellay and Amrabat tried to do something.
