Cautious van Basten

It looks like Marco van Basten will take advantage of their early qualification and rest up to six players who have all received bookings. van Bronckhorst, Mathijsen, Heitinga, Boulahrouz, Robben and van Bommel. I understand the tactic and the decision I just don’t like it.

So who will be starting? I’m stumped for defense especially if van Basten intends to rest van Bronckhorst, Heitinga, Mathijsen AND Boulahrouz. I expect one of those three centre-backs to play. Here is my choice

E. van der Sar

Kromkamp
Mathijsen
Ooijer
de Cler

van der Vaart
Cocu
Sneijder/Maduro

Kuyt
van Nistelrooy
van Persie

Substitutes that I feel are likely would be Jaliens on for de Cler, Maduro or Landzaat on for someone(I can’t pick who) and probably Babel late on.

I think van Basten wants to have some resemblence and continuity but that’s the best I can come up with.

I agree with this logic, no reason to risk losing a starter when it is not necessary!!
Here is my starting team for the Argentina game :

Kromkamp
Jaliens
Ooijer
De Cler

Maduro
Van Der Vaart
Landzaat

Kuyt
Van Nistelrooy
Van Persie

Subs:
Babel for Van Persie
Vennegoor for Van Nistelrooy

I think that Argentina will rest some players too and start thier B team. You know Tevez, Aimar, Messi, Cruz. Good luck you will need it Netherlands .

It has to be done, even SGE is planning to do it for England since the single yellow will not carry over pass the group stage.

I’d like to see all play but can’t imagine risking Robben/Boulahrouz/Gio/Mathijsen missing round 2 if they happen to get another yellow. Argentina will definitely rest some players as well and with new faces, perhaps MvB can find a new combination (isn’t this how he “found” van Persie since Kuyt was the one tipped as starter prior to the friendlies?) of the right players.

Even if we don’t go full force, I think we’re still on par with Argentina. Those who think Argentina will win easily by judging from previous 2 matches may be proven wrong. We shall see.

GO ORANJE!

With England already safely through to the Round of 16 after two wins from two games, Eriksson has hinted that a combination of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch could miss the Sweden match.

They are all one booking away from suspension and while a second yellow card on Tuesday would leave them suspended for the second round, players on single yellows do not carry them forward from the first stage.

Aha…so the yellow cards are no longer valid beyond the group? Silly, but nice.

@todduta lol!! What a depth the Gauchos have, eh?

Well guys, I agree… Rest our booked players but still try to win the game and play Mexico in the next phase.

I like resting the booked players. Also makes for a nice opportunity to give the subs some world cup in their legs with little to lose.

As much as it pains me to say, I have even more dislike for trying to pick out the best next opponent. The point is to beat them all, to be the champion. You never know what happens or what form people are in on the day it counts. An ‘easy’ opponent might suddenly surprise, or a tough one have an off-day.

Wednesday I’ll be watching feet-up with a cup of coffee.

Even if we do get thrashed by Argentina.. we’ll be safe from one of the best teams until the finals then ;)

@Vincent
Agree mate! If you want to become the champs, it doesn’t matter who you draw. All those musings about becoming first or second… Irrelevant. Play the best you can every game and see where you end up.
