Brazil can be Stopped

June 7th, 2006 | By: Mike | 9 Comments »

Jose Mourinho thinks that Brazil can absolutely be stopped but only by the Netherlands or Germany.

I would probably be more excited about this vote of confidence if it wasn’t for the fact that he named Germany as well. Is Germany really in the same league as the Netherlands? I don’t buy it one little bit. Compare the qualifying campaigns of Germany and the Oranje; oh wait the Germans have had a vacation on the run in while the Dutch have defeated the Czechs, Finland and Romania twice each, while also beating Mexico, Ecuador and Cameroon.

germany is playing IN GERMANY, remember south korea 2002, france 1998, italy 1990, they all got a boost cause of playing at home.

The team that outmuscles Brazil (without overt fouling) and imposes their midfield to its full extent will beat Brazil. Portugal, Germany, and Serbia & Montenegro could all stifle even this Brazilian team, because once you get past the midfielders, they’ve got two dinosaurs defending, and an error-prone goaltender.

Turkey had the best chances to beat Brazil in ‘02, because they played like the Sex Pistols; brash, powerful, intently, and unafraid.

I also agree with you Mike. I believe Holland CAN beat Brazil, but Germany?? This is a team which struggled against Japan recently, forget about beating Brazil. IMHO, the only teams that can stop Brazil are:

-Holland
-Argentina
-Portugal

Hey guys, NEVER rule out the Zjermans. They have a way of playing bad with mediocre players and getting far: 1986, 1990, 1996… In ‘74 they even had a decent team, but in other tournaments (WC’s and EC’s) they always did well. It’s a mental thing, truly. Something to be envyous of, I tell ya

Yo guys, in 86, 90 and 96 they didn’t have great teams either, but they went all the way. Dramatic football ect, but results, yes. So never rule Ze Zjermans out. I’d say we could use some of their mental power and focus, ya know…

I would rule out any latin team to beat Brazil – portugal; argentina; etc etc.. All those will go down b/c in the latin style of football brazil is unfortunately best.

Mourinho is right. I feel u need a northern or western european team to beat them (england; holland; germany; sweden??)

Looking at possible fixtures, brazil could very much meet Ghana in the second round.. The latter are looking good, and can very easily muscle-out anyone.
what do u say ?

I watched Brazil play New Zealand in their last friendly b4 the cup and although we are ranked somwehere around millionth in world cup rankings we created a lot of good scoring chances against them. I don’t think their defence are good enough to win this time. Germany are at home always a big advantage, but I think England have as good a chance as anyone. Good luck to the ozzies, hope they at least qualify for the next round
