Bravehearts fear Oranje more than France…

March 19th, 2009 | By: Jan | 10 Comments »

The last game Oranje played against Scotland in 2003 ended in a 6-0 win in De ArenA, with a Sneijder on fire. Gary Caldwell doesn’t think Van Marwijk’s team can expect another one of those wins.

At the Scottish press conference, the Braveheart spoke of his experiences as a sub during that game… “Don’t forget, we did win 1-0 in Scotland! But we wanted to approach the away game in a similar matter but it appeared to be suicide. This time, we’ll do it differently,” said the Celtic player.

Caldwell played both games for Scotland against France, in the run up to the EC2008. In both cases, Scotland won, 1-0. “But Oranje isn’t France. The Dutch team is much stronger. The French were getting old and didn’t have that hunger against us. The wear and tear was obvious, no matter their past palmares. I think we were lucky meeting them at the right time.”

“But Holland is younger, and much quicker. They are tough to play. One striker and three moving creative midfielders… You never know where they’ll hit you. They’re very skilled, they’re all fast and fit. It will be a very tough game.”

Caldwell went on: “We must forget that 6-0 lesson. Both teams are different. I think we are much better than in 2003. It’s hard to play us. We will have to be as good as we were against France, in Paris… Probably better…”

We all remember Sneijder’s game against the Scots, but watch us play them in 1978:

Hey bro Tiju…just came back from the Wine Growing area of Margaret River and have kept up and read most articles especially those about Kuyt and v Bommel :) .
Was a week of Golf, Gourmet Food and superb wine (sorry Finn !) Day temperature in the Sun of 26 degrees and nights at 14-16. Great Watershed Wines … Now looking forward to weekend matches but moreso to the 28th and 1st (or 2nd ?) Also the CL draw should be great ! By the way I am hosting a wine dinner paired with North Indian Food – Yummy and YES they can match very well.

I think we could go perfect for the hole qualification. Not ties or losses.

the hardest games left are scotland home and away and norway home.

I think we will win all of our home games so maybe scotland away or a shock draw with a minnow is our only chance of not getting perfection.

@Jan: Still struggling with the notion of chili beer even if it comes from Yalingup…

So now we have Chelsea vs ‘pool and Barca vs Bayern in the CL, and the winners meet in the semi’s. I say Pool – Barca, with Barca nicking it in the end on a late Messi strike before beating Man U 3-1 in the final.

Would love to see Man U and Sir Alex mess up against Porto again.

I wouldn’t say Scotland fears the Oranje, but we respect the hell out of them, and yes, to me, this team is stronger than the aging French team we beat twice in Euro qualifiers. Frankly, I’m more concerned with the Iceland match, because at this point, Scotland is playing most realistically for second place.

So we’d appreciate it if you beat them. :)
