Best players are cursed!

July 4th, 2006 | By: Jan | 5 Comments »

The best players of the world seem to be cursed. At the peak of their game, they just can’t seem to be able to become champions of the world. Those who win the Player of the Year or win the Golden Ball are all sent home without the gold.

Di Stefano, Spain, totally missed the WC’58 with his country. Eusebio, Rivera, they couldn’t win in respectively ’70 and ’66. Johan Cruyff made it to the finals at the WC’74 and started that famous solo in the 1st minute leading to a penalty kick and Holland’s lead, only to lose with 2-1. Alan Simonsen didn’t make it to the WC’78 with Denmark, Kalle Rummenige got to the finals in WC’82 but lost to Rossi and his mates. Platini couldn’t go all the way in ’86 and van Basten couldn’t even win a game, let alone score at the WC’90. Baggio made it to the finals in ’94 to miss an important penalty-kick (eh, yes Clarence, there actually are no unimportant ones), Ronaldo fell on his face in ’98, Figo didn’t manage to qualify for the ‘02WC and this time around, of course, our good friend Mark van Bommel couldn’t convert his Golden Ball at this WC.

Oops, I mean Ronaldinho of course… :-)

Eusebio (9 goals) was in 1966, actually.

Figo and POR did qualify for the WC02. What POR did fail in (in 2002), was to get out of groups, loosing to the USA, tharshing POL and loosing to Korea (a draw would be OK and shorly before the end they scored and we went home – depressing, he…?), before SPA and ITA…

ps – POR’s Ricardo just set a new WC record (ENG match), with 3 penalty saves! :-)

FORCA PORTUGAL!!!

Actually, Figo and Portugal did qualify for the WC finals in Korea/Japan in 2002. But didn’t do much there, failing to pass the group stage.
