Bergkamp retires
After the loss to Barcelona in the Champion’s League Dennis Bergkamp officially retired. When I think of him the phrase that always comes to mind is “amazing footballing brain”. It might sound a little awkward but it sums up the man perfectly.
He scored what was, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful goals in the Premiership ever and gave the Dutch fans a ton of memories…I think you’re probably thinking of the same one that I am. The World Cup ‘98…1-1 against Argentina…89th minute…de Boer floats a long pass towards Bergkamp… effortless control… incredible technique… and a perfect finish.
Here is a link to Jack van Gelder’s commentary during that match against Argentina in 1998. It gives me goosebumps everytime. (Right click and save it; I can’t get it to work properly otherwise.) Noone will argue that the man was nothing short of brilliant. I uploaded my favourite compilation of Dennis Bergkamp for all to enjoy; it has THAT goal and the commentary too. Simply sublime.
that goal he scored against argentina is unforgettable. it is one of the most beautiful goals in the history of world cup. what do you think guys?are we going to score such an amazing goal in june? and who can score it? robben, vdv, vns or cocu?

Great memories, indeed. One of the most elegant, controlled, intelligent players ever, I’d say. A goal like that, I can see van Persie do that, and certainly Vaart.
As for memories, I remember his debut in Ajax. Cruyff needed him for a European cup match, away in Sweden. 17 year old, and he couldn’t come due to school commitments, so he said to Cruyff/Ajax that he would come only if his teacher allowed him
. So, he played against a record cap holder of Sweden. 102 caps. Cruyff said, yes he is experienced, but he is slow. So, just run passed him all the time. (Dennis played on the right wing in that match). And that is what Bergkamp did. The whole matich. Used his speed and practically humiliated the Swede. After the match, most critics (including myself!!!!) all agreed: “The kid was a fast but blind runner. Couldn’t do more. Wouldn’t make it in Ajax or anywhere else. What was Cruyff thinking?”
I am still ashamed of that

I remember watching that game. I couldn’t believe my eyes. At first I thought it had to have been by accident but it absolutely wasn’t.

I Remember watching that game, i though we would be doomed due to penalty;s, but like 40 seconds before time, De Boer crosses the ball to Bergkamp, and i remember everyone in the house going crazy when he scored that goal. I really think 2 teams are goin to want revenge on us, serbia for the 6-1 and argentina for 1998 haha. Owell, they can always try!

As an Oranje fan who think F. de Boer had been the best Oranje in the last couple tourneys, Bergkamp always reminds me of that spectacular goal from de Boer’s 60-meter pass.
Amen for a great career.
2 things:
1. BTW, have you guys joined this Yahoo Fantasy League? Everyone is required to pick a “favorite” team, in which league they will be included additionally we can join/create a private league:

http://en.fifaworldcup.fantasysports.yahoo.com/ff/publicgroup/26
Mike, you should start a private league so all of your blog patrons can compete.
2. Any Oranje-blooded folks on this blog residing in San Francisco Bay Area? I need game-watching partners for the matches next month (my wife is not going to be keen since Romanian did not qualify).
CHEERS,

There’s only one Dennis Bergkamp: walking along, singing a song;
welcome to a Bergkamp wonderland.
(The song may’ve been sung about others, but it found its true subject.)
He’s also the only player to be first, second and third in the same month of the BBC’s Match of the Day’s (Premiership) Goal of the Month competition.

Never, ever, will i forget his beautifull goals for our National team. His goal against Argentinia still makes me cry and wish that he never retired: that Bergkamp will keep playing football till he’s a hundred years and even longer. He was a player who forfilled our dreams, made us cry of happiness and made us jump of from our seats when he performed his brilliant actions.
Dennis, bedankt.
