Bayern Munich humiliates Cruyff and Ajax!

December 16th, 2008 | By: Jan | 9 Comments »

It’s 30 years ago that Johan Cruyff was presented with a huge hangover after his farewell match against Bayern Munich. November 7, 1978 and Ajax had lost 0-8 against the Germans.

It was supposed to be a huge party for Jopie in the Olympic Stadium. JC would say bye bye against Bayern Munich. The day after the game, players, management and trainers of Ajax came together to digest this huge uppercut. Chairman Harmsen: “It was a huge blow. This game was supposed to be a celebration for the best player Ajax ever had. It’s a shame it ended like this.”

And as one can expect from the Amsterdam bluf club, it was all Bayern’s fault! Former Oranje team manager Fadrhonc had gone immediately into the Munich dressing room to to point the finger and ask them “why the hell they did this…”

Ajax coach Cor Brom: “Our mentality for that game was different. We wanted it to be a football show. A fiesta. We wanted to give Johan a glorious farewell, but Bayern wasn’t in on the script.”

Two years ago, reporter Hans Janssen wrote an extensive reconstruction of this match, telling the story from the German angle as well. This showed, that no one from Ajax was at the airport to welcome the guests. The agitation grew when they found out they were put in the third-rate hotel somewhere. Ajax appeared to be a bad host.

Paul Breitner: “During our warming up, the fans yelled Nazi Schweinhunden to us and the Ajax players totally ignored us. As if we were extras in the whole thing. Still, Maier, Muller, Oblak and myself decided to allow JC to shine. And we did, but Rummenigge couldn’t be reigned in. And that was also Ajax’ fault. They didn’t stop him, and what do you do when you’re a striker and you end up in the box with a chance? You score! In all honesty, it wasn’t us so much who ruined Johan’s night.”

Way before the end, tens of thousands of fans had left. The match, broadcast in a dozen countries, took 400,000 guilders, which were donated to charity.

You know a few years ago (could have been 3, 5, 7…they go by quickly), I could swear I read an article (World Soccer magazine?) about an Ajax-Bayern European Cup semi-final during Ajax’s early 70’s run that was voted by journalists as the best European cup performance ever. Not sure what the criteria was, but it was the second leg of a drawn first leg, and Ajax destroyed them. Jan, Goose, do you guys have anything on that? I mean if we have to hear about 0-8… ;) Just kidding. As always, I enjoyed the piece, Jan.

Yeah, I do remember that game. I also think that that pouncing did have an effect on Bayern in JC’s farewell…

Boy, I’ll have to dig deep….

Guys I do remember the game, April 1995, it was an absolute classic, Mehmet Scholl was the star of BM after the 0-0 draw in Munich. Then at home Ajax absolutely destroyed BM 5-2 and that great Ajax team was heaped with so much praise. They played like Arsenal does on a good day and were also accused of passing too much and trying to walk the ball into the net.
Couldn’t believe my friend actually taped over my tape after I lend it to him *&%$#@ !! Overmars de Boers, Litmanen, Davids, Seedorf, Kluivert etc etc…Best CL game ever and Scholl said afterwards – No one on this earth can beat Ajax when they play like this – It’s football from another planet.

Haha, Carlos… That was a great game, but I do think we’re referring to the 1973 QF (Krol, Rep, Nees)…

At that site mentioned above you can order many rare dvd’s and vids of classic matches. This one as well. And the one you sorely miss, Carlos…

@Carlos, yes I was referring to the 4-0 game Jan dug up. But I’m jealous that you were able to see the 5-2 game…here in the U.S., ESPN broadscast only the CL Milan semi-final that year. When I saw the score and read up on the game, I just shook my head at what I must have missed…I did however see the final from Vienna month later …still have it on tape, in fact!
