Are these numbers just from their salaries, or does it include any advertising/sponsorship money as well?

Great question, Caleb. My guess is that the numbers represent “salaries”, annual pay received by contract. On another issue, how is Andru Jones “Dutch”?

@Bob; Andruw Jones is from Aruba and born there, I think (at least hes from the Dutch Antilles), and therefore automatically a citizen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Btw; didn’t realize Anky’s a millionaire… Unbelievable Drenthe earns that amount of money at this young age…

This is basic salaries. Some will make as much in promotional stuff. I think Makaay at the moment is Holland’s top dog in terms of salaries, although Gabri, Suarez, Simons and Koevermans will be close…

@Ian, replace Afellay with Kuyt, and not a big fan of Heitinga, move Boula more inside and play Zuiverloon on the right—other than that, its a line up that is well worth considering. Would get VDV in a spot closer to goal where he is most effective.
RE: Jones. The beauty of baseball and its long term contracts from a player’s perspective. Jones has been remarkably unproductive for two years; he in fact restructured his contract to defer a good chunk of his remaining salary so that he would be more attractive to a team that wanted to take a chance on a player who is two years past putting up numbers commensurate with his salary. Can’t blame him though. If some owner is silly enough to guarantee a guy $18m/year coming off a bad year…

Well, for me Boulahrouz is useless. He is the worst player ever to wear an Oranje jersey…it shows the poor competition back there because in Koeman´s and de Boer´s times he would never have been be there and certainly not even called up but now it seems he has plenty of fans due to his tough style to tackle but he has no build up, no attack, no technique, doesn´t score and is not strong in the air…As Tiju says that Kuyt is not Oranje material I support the idea that Boulahrouz should not be considered but Kuyt does.=)…Well, that´s just my opinion.

@ian – Only if you have PLAYED for the first team i.e. Oranje or whatever country, then you will be deemed as playing (or not playing) for that country for the rest of your life. Giggs played for England Youth teams, then chose Wales (parents influence). I have heard of a couple of players who sat on the bench for the A team but never played – then they switched countries !

In addition, FIFA amended the rules again this year so that if you are young enough (forget the age limit, it’s probably 21), and only played in a friendly you still could switch teams if you are legible.

As Carlos says, the minute you play in a “real” FIFA sanctioned game, you are stuck with that country.

Ah ok, so this is just salary. It’d also be interesting to see what total earnings a year would be and how it would change this ranking.

Related, here’s an interesting article about the top ten best paid sports:

http://us-open-golf-betting.com/highest-paid-sports.html

Football/Soccer is only #6, which is the fourth highest team sport, but I’m guessing that’s because they do it by average and there are a lot of soccer players who don’t make very much money. I wonder how the rankings would look if they took the highest paid athlete from each sport and compared them.
