Barca wants Arsene Wenger

February 13th, 2008 | By: Jan | 8 Comments »

Although it isn’t certain that Frank Rijkaard will leave Barca at the end of this season, Joan Laporte did make a short list. Rijkaard’s name is mentioned in Amsterdam (Ajax) and Milan (AC), so the Barca board is hedging their bets. On the Barca list, we can spot three well-known names: Marco van Basten, Jose Mourinho and – not surprisingly – Arsene Wenger.

Wenger did renew his contract recently, appears to be happy in London and the Arsenal board recently stated that Wenger will not be released from his contract, but hey…this is football…

Wenger has invested too much time and effort into building Arsenal’s current squad of youngsters to just walk out on them right now. This is a team who’s average age is lowest in the Premiership and they are still on top of the league. They will only get better with time and I can’t see Wenger leaving at this stage of the ‘project’.

Besides he has the total confidence and monetary support of the board and the fans treat him like a god in North London. I think it’s just good ole Joan Laporta stirring up the pot.

Wenger leaving Arsenal is about as probable as finding a Dutch not knowing how to ride the bicycle…

well said finn, and i completely agree with clockworkorange…Wenger received a lot of critisism (even from Henry) last season for having a team that was too immature and that would never win anything, he was accused of being delusional thinking that he could mold a bunch of kids with potential into champions without having to buy veteran stars. now that his decisions have been vindicated it would be stupid to leave, i mean after all this work he may as well stick around and enjoy the sucess that arsenal will enjoy in the coming years as his youngsters become world class players.

There is little chance of Wenger leaving Arsenal for Barcelona. He’s onto a good thing there and I would be amazed if he were to leave that security for Barcelona. The most likely candidate seems to be Mourinho.

I agree entirely with clockworkorange.. Wenger would not leave the squad he has been building for years. They are top of the Premiership and still going strong in the Champions League and so it seems stupid that he would leave.

However, I still don’t think I would be that surprised if he did. Barcelona is a major side. He would inherit some of the best players in the world, maybe take a couple from Arsenal with him and start building again. Don’t forget that Barca have one of the best youth academys in the world too, something that could be tempting for Wenger. They’ve picked up on players like Bojan who, in a couple of years, will take La Liga by storm.

I think it is the job that Jose Mourinho is waiting for though, and if he gets the job he will probably go on to do brilliant things there.

Does Mourinho guarantee beautiful football?? I don’t think so.
Barca needs coaches who want to dazzle the world. Mourinho is a result oriented coach who thinks he is the most important thing, and not the team, the top players or the fans, even…
