Babel ignores Van Basten advice

July 25th, 2007 | By: Jan | 25 Comments »

Apparently, Marco van Basten addressed the U21 players before the tournament (they ended up winning, remember?) saying that it wouldn’t be wise for them to accept offers from foreign clubs after a successful campaign if they wanted a chance to go to the EC in 2008!

San Marco explained that investing another year actually playing in the Dutch Eredivisie would be better for their experience, rhythm and the chance that Marco could then at least assess their progress and take them along to Austria/Switzerland.

Bassie’s protege Ryan Babel didn’t think about those words when Liverpool came a-knocking… “I jumped to the opportunity and didn’t remember Marco’s words,” he said. “I’m convinced Benitez will give me ample playing time to prove my worth for Oranje.”

one dutchman replaces the other..deZeeuw was a real cult hero (esp. after Tony Blair named him in an interview as one of his favo players.. wich he prob. did to show Britain that he was a connaisseur!)

i never liked Melchiot, never been sure about his qualities and still pissed cause i remember the game when he first played for Oranje (against Port. in 2000…remember that one, aghhhh), they played crap and after the game he refused to talk to the media (as did the rest btw)..just walked straight passed them with his cool sunglasses and his gum..what he wanker he was back then..but alas ill give him the benefit of the doubt, hes older and i hope he has learned from the past

Babel wasn’t the only one, Rigters moved to the Blackburn Rovers.

True, but Babel is already an ORanje international. Rigter isn’t and I can’t see him becoming one either, to be honest…

I don’t want to be an ass or a racist(and this has nothing to do with this current topic) but I believe there are too many black guys on the dutch team. I’m missing the pure dutchies like Bergkamp, and the De Boer twins. I mean almost all of the U21 squad was black and I don’t want that to be the future of Nederland.

I don’t get your point Bart I really don’t get it.
It doesn’t matter if they are black or white as long as they are good players, but look at the senior team and there are very few black players.
What I do hope is that in the future players like Robben, Drenthe, Persie, etc reach Bergkamp’s or the de Boer’s level.

I don’t mind a couple black players (like Davids, Gullit, Rijkaard) , but the U21 has all black players except for Kruiswijk and de Ridder. It’s just Holland is a tall blonde nation. I’d just like to see more tall blondies (like me).

I know where your coming from Bart. I am a Canadian of Dutch Parents, You grow up in Canada thinking all Dutch people are fair and white. It seems weird when I was in Holland last year to see non-whites speaking Dutch. It klopt niet. However, you have to field the best possible team. You cannot have any reverse affirmative action, even if its subtle. Let the chips fall where they may.

Funny topic. “Don’t want to be racist but I don’t like so many black guys in the team”… Hahaha..

I do stand-up comedy in Australia and one of my lines is: Two things I hate: racism and negroes…

But anyway, Holland is not the country of blond blue-eyed people. Many Ozzies think that as well, but it ain’t so. I am dark. My grandmother was Indonesian. Due to the Dutch colonial ways, there’s heaps of Moluks blood (Gio, Landzaat), Suriname blood (Babel, Rijkaard, Gullit, Davids) and other bloods… Turkish, African, Morrocan… What can you say… If they have a Dutch passport, they’re in. Look at the French… The senior team has heaps of whiteys (V Persie, vd Vaart (albeit half Spanish, is that ok?), Robben, Sneijder, De Zeeuw, vd Sar, etc).

Oranje looks great with dark skin!

well, think i know what Bart means.. its a tricky thing.. the problem is; who do you identify with..
anyone ever seen Germinal Beerschot? (Belgium first legeau) its an all african team (i mean 100%) and thats difficult for the local fans to accept cause they cant identify with these boys..
now the situation in Holland is different, we have a lot of coloroured dutchman and its not an issue here
it can become a problem tough when/if these players behave non-dutch (like the Surinam boys after the U21 final), then its easy to loose connection with these guys as a dutch fan
but its ok; little white boys are more likely to look at white players and little black boys will do the same with black players..its just more natural..

as long as you behave dutch (whatever that is) i really dont care about the colour of your skin, but if you dont you make it an issue yourself!

i have to be honest; if i had to choose i rather see a dutch team of only whites rather then a dutch team of only blacks BUT a mixture is fine, Oranje is part of dutch society and this society is not white-only like it used to be (and as any other west-european country)

in the end we (or vanBasten) selects the best players, if theres a new Cruijff and hes green ill take him!!

grzt

Oranje also looks great with white skin!! haha

Jan: i remember the years i spent in france when lots of white french people started their conversation about politics, etc like this: you know,i’m not a racist, but to be honest,i don’t like the arabs… and jean-marie le pen, the leader of french extreme right politics really detested the 98 team.
for ex in hungary i don’t like that the society is too white. i miss the cultural mixture (the multiculturalism)of a london,a paris or a amsterdam.
so,i think the durch u21 is fine and the one thing i’m interested in is that oranje should win in a spectacular way

With the extreme right parties making their way through Europe in a really disgusting and worrying way (look at Austria, France and Denmark), I am nothing but happy to see black players in the national teams. I must say though that the discussion itself is sort of disgusting: in 2007 we shouldnt care at all about a persons skin colour.

To have many black players is something good, its a sign of good integration, and good integration is a sign of great humanity and great humanity is very uncommon.

I wish we had more black players in the Swedish national team but since our integration mostly suck (Most Swedes are very boring, quiet and afraid to take risks which is not a common culture anywhere else) I have a hard time seeing it happening anytime soon.

Today, the Swedish national team only got one starter with roots abroad and that is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. I hope there will be more soon: it would be great for integration in Sweden if a player with roots outside could become a legend. Of course, Henrik Larsson is sort of a legend but he is the most Swedish guy you could ever find.

First I am Dutch born, I moved to Canada when I was 10. Oh and I’m blond and blue eyed. Tjeerd might have a point though, I didn’t really live in the city. So I didn’t really see a whole lot of Morrocans and Surinamers. I guess I pretty much thought the ratio was something like 85:15. I did not like it when Waterman and all those other guys started wearing the Suriname flags. I don’t care if there’s “coloured” people on the team, I just don’t want to see an all “coloured” team. It would just not be right(to me). I think half white half couloured is a good ratio. But not more.

Oranje looks great all around.

i live in london and no one who lives here can deny they are not a bit racist! i mean tony blair let too many immigrants in and now we are now feeling the effects of this. Saying this my favourite players are robinho and persie and i dont have a problem with black people in the national team. england is in a similar position with its national team. there has to be some sort of patriotsim no matter how many coloured players are in the team and this can be achieved with black people and white people. its all about loving ur country and if they do that it dont matter

In Canada, Hockey is King. Yet in Canada we are much more Multicultural then Holland. If you see the makeup of high level Canadian Hockey players, it is 98% white. It is partly cultural, partly financial. Immigrants from Asia, Carabian, Africa,South America and the Middle east tend to other sports like soccer, cricket etc. Hockey is also an expensive sport (equipment and Ice time). Look at Jonathon De Guzman. Jamacan mother, Filipino father meet in Toronto and have two sons. Both high level soccer players, one in Spain the other for Feyenoord. The irony is that Jonathon has applied for a Dutch passport and play for Oranje, rather then join his brother and play for Canada.
In Holland, Immigrants already like soccer, unlike Hockey its a much more International sport, thus you will have more and more playing for Oranje.
Jan, I have a Question. Have there been any cases of Dutch born players with parents from another country choosing to play for that other country rather then Oranje (ie. Turkey)

@Tjeerd; ill take that one;
the only players we have who are born in Holland and who almost all choose to play for their parents country in Marocco!
true; Aisatti and his friend form Psv (forgot his name) chose Holland in the end but it was only after a long thinking period..
with the risk of going ‘politics’; this is the one group of immigrants who (at least a big part of the group) refuse to take part in our society and to be honest; to say that these maroccans are not very popular is a big understatement..lot of tension between Maroccans and other groups (Surinam, Antillen, Whites etc.), getting nasty

colour is not an issue in Holland, since the arrival of the Surinams (’50)..but i can imagine that if someone lived in Holland 30 years ago, went away and came back in 2007 he would be in for a shock..Holland has changed very rapidly (too rapidly for some) at least in the big cities..i live in DenHaag and im a minority as a white guy here, i can imagine what Bart means in his comment

the one thing we have is a great national team that has played at the highest level for quiet som etime now..most players dont need to think that long cause they know they can get glory with the dutch national team and not the maroccan, surinam team

well; sorry for the politics, cant wait for the football to start!!

btw; since theres no real football news (accept that yesterday my club DenHaag opened its new stadion!)

who are your most hated players???

dont know were it comes from but alas…

1. Totti: always have hated him..remember him spitting on deZeeuw, stamping on Berbatov..good player but the biggest asshole in football

2. Ronaldo: dont think i need to explain but do so anyway,haaha..diver, always crying ond portugees (sorry Louis, nothing personal)

3. Nigel de Jong: his father was a thief, steeling from teammates..overrated player, ugly face

4. Zlatan: should play in a circus, great streetfootballer, shitty teammate, dirty ellbowing basterd

5. Balak: best german footballer at this time..thats enough for me

6. Ali Boussabon; marrocan player, fat, crossed-eye, wanker, cry baby..just hate him

7. Roberto Carlos; dont know why..just dont like the lad

some classics:

Rudi Voller (nice one Frank!)

Andy Moller (remember that pose when he scored against England

Bebeto: scored that goal against us in 94 and started that stupid little dance

Lothar Mattheus; great footballer but what a german!!

i see there a lot of germans here… theres obviously still a lot of hurt..hahaha..

but still; winner by a mile is Totti, would love to see him get hurt!!

With van Basten’s track record of decisions since he took over the national squad, I can see why he is ignored.

I just wanted to say that I was very sorry to see the remark about too many black players.

My mother emigrated from an almost lilly white Netherlands, but here best friend was half Indonesian. Heck go anywhere in Nederland for a traditional Dutch meal and chances are you’ll get a rijs tafel – Indonesian.

Holland is now a multi-cultural, multi-racial nation – and the national voetbal team will reflect that. And should.

The irony of course is that too many black skin shows off the Orange a bit more nicely than the pasty white pink stuff :) .

So yes, I love the multi-cultural Oranje. I love Gio’s story. I love it.
