AZ Alkmaar & Kluivert

March 15th, 2007 | By: Jan | 3 Comments »

Louis van Gaal and his AZ Alkmaar made it through to the next stages of the UEFA cup tournament!

After having lost 4-2 against Newcastle United last week, van Gaal already expressed his belief that - as long as AZ played their “own ” game - they could easily score twice and proceed to the next round.

He made some changes to the team and prepped them well… It only took AZ 10 minutes to get things right and stop Newcastle from even trying. AZ played tight, focussed and fast-paced positioning football and Shota Arveladze scored in the first half (Koevermans assist). In the second half, AZ pressed on resulting in a Koevermans header 2-0.

Although Newcastle tried to get back in the game - playing va banque - AZ goalie Waterman stopped the English side from scoring, whereas AZ had chances of scoring some more….

But they didn’t, which resulted in some scary moments before the end whistle sounded, but at the end Louis’ men did it. AZ Alkmaar is through.

Good news for the Ozzies too, who are eyeing van Gaal to become their new coach for the WC 2010 campaign.

Although I am a bit of a Van Gaal fan myself, I’m not sure the man would fit the Socceroos…. But that’s another story….

Other news…Patrick Kluivert is set to return in the PSV side. He is almost fit, trained with the group and is looking forward to play with PSV against Ajax, the club where it all started for the CL-matchwinner of 1995.

AZ played very well indeed, very grown-up performance… also interesting is the performence of the young AZ goalie Boy Waterman..he played very mature and full of selfbelieve..its intersting cause in a few years time (post EC ‘08) we’ll need a new goalie for Oranje..a very importent position in any team and dont forget; vanderSar has been in goal for us since 1995 so almost 12 years!!!
think we have two talented goalies:
1. Stekelenburg
2. Waterman

think those are the people we need to focus on in the future
