Au revoir Ruud?

May 13th, 2006 | By: Mike | 16 Comments »

Ruud could be on his way to French champions Lyon. This is a new one at least. I think the French league has grown in quality over the past few years however its still not up to the level of Italy, Spain and England. Its also a place where Dutch players haven’t made much of a mark.

Hm, I guess it would be a step down for Ruud :-/

Why? If RvN gets to play and he is happy with the decision of helping a French team top there group, why not? Man United dont have to be that much better than Lyon, certainly not if ruud van Nistelrooy will play for them! I would still prefer seeing a move to PSV or Tottenham

I agree with Knut; Ruud is still at the level where he could play with one of the world’s best teams. Lyon isn’t quite up there. PSV seems like a good idea. They regularly do well in Europe although they just lost Hiddink.

At least the food is better in Lyon than in Manchester.

Becareful what you say there Mike about Lyon, if there was one dissapointment in champs league this year it’s the fact that Lyon didn’t challange for the final like they should have.

While the league itself may be a step down for Ruud, it does fit his style of play quite well, lots of up and down the field, not so tactical like the english league. Mind you at the same time I would love to see him back on PSV, but Lyon isn’t that bad of a stop that some make it out to be

Ruud’s skills have seriously deteriorated, which is sadly forcing him to go to France to play.

Hup! Hup! Hup!

Every player has his ups and downs in his career, and ruud is still regarded as one of the best strikers in Europe. Dont under-estimate his ability’s. Who knows, maybe Lyon can beat Man United with ruud in there team, Man U havent been playing top football lately, which they should be with all those world class players. But in my opinion, PSV’d be a great move, and he might be able to lead them to victory in Europe, even without Hiddink. Interresting to see all these opinions from people! Hup Holland Hup, Laat de leeuw niet in zijn hempie staan!

Ruud us still one of the best strikers around and whoever says his skills have deteriorated doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He had a falling-out with Ferguson and that is the only reason he hasn’t been playing lately. I’d like to see him in a big team (maybe AC Milan, if Shevchenko decides to leave) but i like Lyon so if he does end up there i’d still be happy.

IMO, Ferguson should stop acting like a moron and realise he’s giving up his MVP. Whatever problems they have they should just sit down and solve them. RVN still has 2-3 good years in him.

With Sheva wanting to leave Milan for Chelsea, I believe Ruud will find his way to AC Milan. This would be interesting in the sense that Van Basten could ended up there as well. Milan or Real Madrid seem likely because they will be retooling this summer.

As a Liverpool fan, I think we should take Ruud Van Nistelrooij and offload Crouch & Morientes to Man Utd. =)

DT, don’t even joke about such things…I don’t think I could handle another “Ince”dent. Not to mention the costs of having to redo all the doorways so that Crouch can make it into the dressing room.

I just have to react to all this :-) .
1. Lyon IS a European topteam. I agree with Kyle, I expected them to reach the CL finals as well, based on their play in the groupmatches.
2. PSV is secondrate. They do well sometimes, most of the times they couldn’t get beyond the group phase.
3. Van scored 25 times this season?? The man is not over the hill. If I was the ManU owner, I’d say Fergie is over the hill. His people-management skills suck! it’s not the 70s anymore. Look at Ince, Keane, Becks, Stam and now Van. It’s almost pathetic. Who’s next? Scholes?
4. I think Van and Real Madrid is a match made in heaven. Robinho on left, Becks right, Raul luring behind Van. Ronaldo?? They should sell him, I guess…
5. Cruyff went from Ajax to Feyenoord whem he was 37!! He made Feyenoord champs in that season. So watch Van in the Worldcup. See what anger can do for a sportsman ;-)

You’re comparing Ruud to Cruyff eh? I assume you mean in terms of their ability to change a team.

I think PSV is better than people give them credit for. They had two decent European campaigns back to back. They are not at the same level as the competition around them but I think there is that potential with a world class striker.

I compare Ruud and Cruyff not so much in their skills and imnpact but in their winning spirit. Cruyff was a very very sore loser and sometimes motivated by revenge. I see the same hungriness and eagerness in Ruud. just watch him score goals, the venom and spite he sometimes put in his kicks. So, for us Dutchies, an agitated Ruud is like manna from heaven. As for PSV, you may be right, but look at it from Ruud’s perspective: where would you rather play football, in sunny Spain/Italy/France or in boring, flat, rainy Holland (against NEC, Roda JC, Sparta, Groningen etc etc:-(

Lol, well if it comes down to a question of climate…I agree with what you say about his spirit.

I absolutely know what you mean about Ruud and his venom. I remember one bit of commentary during a match. Ruud just scored a penalty and the announcer said, “And after being denying Ruud earlier…the keeper would have been plain foolish to get in the way of that.”
