And so we go on! Marco on Clarence
Thanks for your posts guys…
Here’s a piece of info from the Voetbal International magazine, borrowed from the former Pain Germany Orange site… Thanks for that….
Marco on Clarence:
“I’m not going to say that I think that Clarence Seedorf is a worse footballer than Evander Sno.” Head coach Marco van Basten had to defend himself on Friday afternoon in Zeist for decisions not to call up Seedorf for the upcoming friendly against England.
“He planned his charm offensive well”, referring to the media attention that has been centered around Clarence for the past weeks. “But, my opinion is still that we don’t need him yet. I don’t select players based on newspaper interviews.”
“There exist different types of midfielders. You have your creative midfielders, controlling midfielders and midfielders that have a high capacity for running. I find Seedorf creative with a very good technical upbringing. So, he needs to compete with Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder. Currently my preference is with these two. They haven’t disappointed me.”
“So, I’m not going to say that Evander Sno is a better player than Clarence Seedorf. That’s like comparing apples and pears. Sno is a controlling midfielder. I’m not going to say that Seedorf will never get another chance. But, right now it is true that my preference is with others.”

Ooh.. Marco!
You can always say “I prefer who to that of the other” . That’s your right as a coach.
But you have to understand why your fans turned against you. Why Seedorf, once a most hated player, come back to be most wanted.
Seedorf showed a charm
on expressing his commitment to NT, while the coach respond in harsh words. That’s a shame.
However, results and way the team play always answer how right or wrong you are. Dutch supporters never agree with present mid-field mix, that still far from being domainate against any classy opponent.
Friendly with England is around the corner, prove us you are right.

Seedorf’s comments were well thought out and mindful of the current climate surrounding the squad, he basically stood there cap in hand and said please give me a try. Meanwhile Marco’s reply seems to suggest that he is becoming tired/annoyed by the pressure put on him. To much politic-ing. His handling of the “stars” is continuing to jeporadize the potential of the team. Whether he likes it or not the team is in need of experienced character. This is not to suggest that I think Clarence is the answer, one need only think back to last Euro and recall him arguing with Dick mid game while on the pitch. Never mind his media comments from then.
Marco is smart, but he still seems to have the feel of an intellgent player pretending to be a coach.

Seedorf made another really weak performance yesterday. I cant see why you want him so badly. He hasnt been really good for like 2-3 years.

There will be some serious pressure on our midfield next week against england..not only on the pitch but also for vanBasten!! im almost hoping they do bad and so prove vanBasten wrong…im sure this midfield wont be enough against real strong opposition..the english will play their very best cause of their result in Croatia…well have to put up a real fight…
so very sad to hear vanBasten talk about Seedorf like the latter hastnt diserved any respect..the man won 3 championlegeuas!!!

van der vaart and sneijder together does not seem to work, maybe seedoft + one of them(vdv or ws) would work better…
but it seems seedorf has a drop pf form at milan currently

Ajax 0-1 PSV who watched the game??
PSV is that good?

Why Oraanje needs Seedorf:-
Am sure most of you would have followed Ernst Bouwes’ article in ESPN Soccernet sometime back (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=384972&root=euro2008&cc=5901) in which he describes the travails of the Dutch strikers, who play in a 2 striker mode for most of the year and have to adapt to 4-3-3 in the Oraanje. Not only this but 4-3-3 puts the Dutch midfield against 4 or 5 of the opposition and therein we lie the risk of ceding bulk of the possession to them.
In my opinion one of the best formations in WC 06 was the 4-2-3-1 followed by Raymond Domenech of France. The defensive midfield duo of Viera and Makelele coupled with the centre backs Gallas and Thuram created an almost impregnable wall in front of Barthez, and this when you had Zidane and Henry upfront.
The best part of this is that this can very well be transformed to a 4-5-1 ( a la Arsene Wenger) or even 4-3-3 as the need dictates.
Now the question is who will be the strong 2 in the 4-2-3-1?
I fully agree with Goose when he says that vanBommel has been one of the best defensive midfielders around. His commitment to the team and his attitude hs been exemplary (notwithstanding his spat with Basten). The other candidate should ideally have been ‘PitBull’ Davids, but his age being a concern there does not seem to be anybody more suitable for this than the old veteran Clarence Seedorf. Remember vDv or Sneijder can nevr fit into this mould as they are basically attacking midfielders and lack the physical solidity of Seedorf/ Van Bommel.
In this context it seems a bit perplexing why Marco is still reluctant to test Seedorf out.

Looks like Seedorf is going to get his shot. Marco called up Clarence today after Wesley Sneider’s injury.

It’s exciting Denial! thanks for the post. I have also checked on other boards, it’s very likely.
Kervin, you are right Vaart and Sneijder never worked well together. Vaart, Seedorf and any 1 holding mid-fielder could produce a balanced mix.
I never see Seedorf as a attacking mid-fielder like Sneijder or Vaart. He is more on controling and playmaking.
Let’s hope our best.

@Kervin, match was ok, not very many changes for either teams btw, PSV is just so very mature,i would go as far as to say that this PSV side is the best club-team we had in Holland since Ajax in 95/96, they are mature, strong and have a lot of confidence, it all showed this game..i think they have a seriuos change this Champ. Legeau
grtz
btw. Great you go on Jan
