A new series: Thanks for the memories…

July 16th, 2009 | By: Jan | 48 Comments »

What binds us together at this wonderful blog, is our love for Orange Clockwork action:

The first minute of the 1974 finals…. Bergkamp’s winner against Argentina 1998… Winter and Bergkamp’s comeback goals against Brazil 1994…Marco’s late slider-goal against Germany in 1988….Van Breukelen’s penalty safe in that same tournament against the USSR….Edgar Davids’ scorcher against Yugoslavia 1998…. Gio’s save on the line, to set up our first goal in the EC 2008 against Italy….

And many many more…

But…a true fan is feels pain as well.

When his team loses. Gets humiliated. Or simply embarrasses itself by playing CRAP!

I’ve had my share of hearbreak (see, I’m a Feyenoord fan to boot).

So, before we visit the biggest howlers in Oranje history, let’s poll which games caused the most grieve…

I had added the lost WC finals to the list, but in all honesty, we did get to the finals in those tournaments….

My Biggest Oranje Howler Ever is(opinion)

Gee… I forgot to mention the year of 2001 when Holland was eliminated in that Ireland game. I got so drunk that day that at the end of my last drink I though it was a nightmare and that Holland was going to be in Japan/South Korea but next day I saw the news and I realized that my only hope for Holland was in a bottle of tequila which I drank the whole day with some buddies besides some beers. Bad, bad day!!!

I even didn´t have the chance to watch the game live as I was supposed to do because in the television company where it was supposed to be broadcasted they switched the programs and they were showing a tennis game and during the tennis game while I was waiting for Holland´s game the commentators said the news telling a storie that it would be a World Cup without an oranje and fun because Holland had just been eliminated by Ireland and I went mad. In México it was like 1:00 P.M and at 2:00 P.M. I had a party so I ran away from home and bought some beers and drinks and the thing went wild…then I suddenly started dreaming that Holland was playing in Japan and next day I found the truth watching the highlights on TV. What a day!!!

I picked the Holland-Italy game in EUro 2000. My first complete memory of Oranje. I was in Asia at the time and so i saw the game at like 3 or 4 in the morning. Oranje completely dominated the game, forced Italy on their own HALF!!! SEVERAL chances of penalty? didn’t use it… In the end we lost to Italy in penalty shoot outs. I was so fcking PISSED

Carlos: without comparing them to oranje 1974 in 2006 italy got to the final without conceiding any goal from their opponents (ghana 2-0,cszech republic 2-0,australia 1-0,ukraine 3-0,germany 2-0),the only goal scored against them was an on-goal (italy-usa 1-1).

well done Ferenc :-) .

Great bunch of football dictionaries on the blog!

Ok, name the players who went from Ajax to Feyenoord… In one go or via another club/clubs…

And do not check Wikipedia!

Talk about old greats, we stole one of yours too. Wim Jansen went the other way via a short stint at Washington Diplomats in the US.

This thread reminds me of a certain Eredivisie game in 1983 where a certain team called Feyenoord with a certain Johan Cruyff, Ruud Gullit and Peter Houtman lost 8-3 to Ajax :-) If I am not mistaken, that is the biggest loss ever by Feyenoord to Ajax.

Mind you, that Ajax team had a certain Ronald Koeman, Frank Rijkaard, Marco Van Basten, Jesper Olsen and Jan Molby. Not bad either :-)

Those were the days when Dutch (club) football kicked real arse.

True, what a game that was. I was appalled. Feyenoord played pretty good actually, it was 3-2 for Ajax and Feyenoord started to take some risks :-) .

This was the game that made JC decide to move Pierre Vermeulen – the flegmatic left winger – out and put Stanley Brard (a left back ) on his position to “restore balance”. They’d win the title that season.

It was 8-2 actually.

I remember that Ajax chairman Ton Harmsen was in the USA for business he called Ajax coach De Mos that night – live on telly when Aadsje was at some sports program – to ask for the result:

Harmsen: Hey Aad, how did you go against Feyenoord?
De Mos: Hey Ton, we won 8-2!
Harmsen: Stop fukcing around with me, De Mos, just tell me the truth!!

Mario Been had to stop a fight between Slory and El Ahmadi at the training session in Portugal. Both players were told to fix it up in a talk and Slory was penalized by Been. Been: “I told everyone to leave his ego home this season onwards. El Ahmadi accepted the apologies by Slory and the players seem to understand that this is not done! But, in all honesty, something like this could actually work out well in the group dynamics. But no more!”

Twente got Sporting, that’s definitely a winnable match for them, hopefully we’ll have 2 dutch teams in the CL.

Another good thing for Dutch teams, is that if you look at the coefficients list, AZ is 22, but 6 teams above them are not in the CL this year, which puts them at 16. This means that AZ Alkmaar will be seeded second in this year’s champions league, and if they get a weak 3rd and fourth team, then they have a chance of making it to the next round.

i’m still hoping that the zlatan to barca transfer wont happen, for one because i don’t think that it would be an improvement to barca’s squad since eto’o would be going the other way (the only advantage is that zlatan is a couple years younger) but more importantly i don’t like zlatan and his over inflated ego and don’t really want to see him on a team i like. plus it wouldn’t do the barca dressing room any good to have a guy like him waltz in and think he is better than everyone else (i can already see henry sulking), hopefully puyol keeps him in line.

Zlatan is a cancer in the dressing room. He should be in Real with the rest of them, not Barca.

In my opinion Ibrahimovic is the best striker in the world, although a lot of people will htink otherwise. He can use both feet, he’s quick, he’s too strong to push off the ball, he’s talented and can do all of the Cristiano Ronaldo moves, only downside is his attitude.

Ibrahimovic is like van Nistelrooij’s scoring + Ronaldo’s tricks/speed + Drogba’s strength.

ibrahimovic is an as**hole,i don’t want to see him at my favourite club. he might be good,he might be brilliant,i don’t mind. more important to see nice and sympathetic guys at barca. the potential transfer is ridiculous: 40millions+eto’o+hleb (one year lone). i could kill txiki beguiristain – he’s the mastermind behind everything against the best forward vin the world, who is not this bastard but samuel eto’o. he dosn’t fit to barca’s philosophy. i’m very very sad. we loose my second favourite player (just behind iniesta) and we’ll have one of the most arrogant and pretentious person of the world football:(

Yeah, it baffles me as well. I mean, Zlatan is obviously gifted but not a team player at all. Still, Pep probably supports this move and last season I read lots about Eto’o being on an ego trip, so…

Zlatan is obviously a fantastic and gifted striker, but I would have loved to see him apply his antics in England on a weekly basis against the John Terry’s, Vidic’s, Ferdinand’s, Lescott’s, Carragher’s and Richard Dunne’s and see what would happen to him.

Playing against people who take no prisoners week in and week out would do him good. Maybe that would make him respect the sport a bit.

I hate these overpaid arseholes who cares for nothing but themselves.

All he needs is 1 bad Sergio Ramos tackle from behind, that takes him out for a couple of weeks to knock some sense into him. He’s already played in a 4-3-3 formation and starred there, probably suits him better to be the lone striker with 2 wingers, doesn’t need to pass as much. I can see Henry getting annoyed with him and moving.
