‘74 Orgy vs v Basten’s kiss with Heidi

It’s a tradition for the Dutch team to always have a good dramatic row or scandal. In ‘74 it was the swimming pool orgy just before the finals, in ‘78 the WC event itself was the scandal, in ‘90 flying ashtrays, a broken nosed coach and frustrated players, in ‘96 Hiddink couldn’t find his head until Davids told him where it was, and in 2000 we mistook football for Rugby Union and scored a lot of points that way. Stam’s ball is still not found. And in ‘02…well, we didn’t go, so no scandals there. Until the infamous Robben replacement against the Czechs we did well in Portugal…

But now this picture emerged on the web… A new scandal in the making? Funny captions to this pic are rewarded.

Aahhh… The Orgy Question

In 74 Bild Magazine (German gossip paper) paid a couple of “nightclub dancers” to go to the Hotel where Oranje stayed and had them join the ‘74 in the pool. At clear daylight. They went in, took their clothes off (the girls I mean) and jumped in the pool, inviting the boys in. Who just looked a bit sheepishly and smiled a bit… Obviously, Bild had photographers tucked away in the bush somewhere and the next day the magazine hit the stands, screaming headlines: Orgy in Dutch Hotel. This hit home. Among others, Johan Cruyff’s wife was outraged by it all and demanded that Johan would come home immediately. It took him, and several other players, hours to convince his wife that nothing happened and that it was a set-up. The team took this with them into the finals, no doubt. Years later, Bild admitted that the whole thing was set up…
