23 Dutchmen in Germany – Part 1

A great idea is a great idea. Its not copying…its paying homage.
Van der Sar
There have also been a few requests for a discussion about who will/should be given a plane ticket come the middle of May. Being in touch with the common folk as I am: may the speculation begin!! We’ll stick to the standard selection criteria, 3 keepers, 8 defenders, 6 midfielders and 6 forwards.

The spots for keeper are probably the least interesting so it will be good to start here. Here are the candidates: Edwin Van der Sar(Manchester United), Maarten Stekelenburg(Ajax), Henk Timmer(AZ), Edwin Zoetibier(PSV), Ronald Waterreus(Rangers), Sander Westerveld(Everton).

I think its pretty safe to predict that Van Basten will take Van der Sar as his number one along with Stekelenburg and Timmer. These are three that are playing regularly and playing reasonably well. I’d be happy to entertain other options if there are other compelling reasons I haven’t considered.

Selected: It was pretty much unanimous. Van der Sar will be number one with Stekelenburg and Timmer as the back ups. On to the defenders.

I think this one will be easy:

1. Edwin Van der Sar (MAN)
2. Henk Timmer (AZ)
3. Maarten Stekelenburg (AJAX)

Timmer and Steekelenburg can trade between 2 and 3, but it doesn’t matter, Van der Sar will enjoy his last world cup, playing all the games.

Van der Sar even better this season despite of his age. Timmer and Stekelenburg would have the chance only if Sar got injured. Only problem with VDS is He need to face the ball (not always to the players upfront )especialy when conceed freekicks. I still remember what happened to him against Gemany at euro20004.
